Joystiq has a follow-up on recent rumors that the Need for
Speed franchise is in trouble, after The
Electric Playground reported that EA may be cancelling the long-running
racing series. This new report is no more concrete than the previous one, as it
is attributed to "a purported EA employ [sic]," but it says that it is EA's
Black Box studio that's in trouble, and is "most likely" being closed, and the
NFS and Skate teams will be moved to EA's Burnaby studios. Their report
indicates what previously have been three distinct NFS teams will be scaled back
and that development of at least one upcoming NFS game will be handled by EA's
Criterion Games using the engine from the Burnout series.
