In a twist reminiscent of the recording industry upon which Guitar Hero is
based,
Variety reports that Viacom-owned Harmonix Music Systems is claiming it is
owed over $14 million in royalties from Guitar Hero III. The claim is Harmonix
was paid at a lower royalty rate that would apply if Guitar Hero III had been
created "from scratch" by new developer Neversoft, rather than the higher rate
that should have been used since GH3 used the tech developed for the first two
installments in the series. Viacom has withdrawn a lawsuit they brought over
this after it apparently inspired Activision to come to the bargaining table to
work this all out.
