R-rated
games may still be out of reach for Australia on Internode Games Network
follows up on recent news that
Australia may receive an R-rating for games (story), which
would allow many titles to be sold down under that were previously not allowed
under what may be the most restrictive rating system in the western world. They
outline the position of
Mr. Michael Atkinson,
one of the attorneys general who must approve the plan, who "doubts whether any
safeguards could be put in place to deter young people, who after all (are) the
most computer literate and savvy in our society, from being able to access
material." The
IEAA's
most mature current classification is MA 15+: "Strong content People under 15
must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian when hiring or buying these
computer games." They offer suggestions on how to contact the AG to try and
influence this situation. On a related note,
GamePolitics reports the public opposition to the proposed R18+ Rating by
the Catholic Bishop of Sydney.
