Turned out that MrsBlue's laptop was savable, a bit of time with tech support uncovered a corrupted driver that put everything right once it was reinstalled. Of course, now addicted to the thrill of the morning hardware adventure, I messed around with the RAM in my work machine this morning, and the box, which was in a touchy state to start with, ended up not wanting to boot properly after my tinkering. This lead to an acceleration of the existing plan to segue my work onto a different machine (which I am using now). That all went surprisingly well for a spontaneous project, though it is fairly mind-boggling how long Outlook can take to import messages when you have a mind-boggling number of them in your old mailer.
