After sorting through the various bits of expertise I received about my 'holes in the
yard' situation that I mentioned yesterday, I'm pretty comfortable with the
explanation that several folks (including my brother) sent along saying that my
"gophers" are probably skunks. I've been told that the skunk
population is quite high around here (in fact at one point I was told that this
was why we did not have raccoons in the area, but the person who said that
apparently never met the raccoon that lives in the tree next door), and that
skunks do indeed dig for grubs. I've also been told that if you aren't willing
to poison the grubs that are the skunk's food supply, you basically need to
resign yourself to a life of filling in holes. I guess this all comes under the
heading of getting what you paid for, since I know one of the reasons I wanted a
house with a backyard was to get a little slice of nature. Now I just have to
wonder when the first time Hudson the wonder dog, who fears no beast of this
earth, will end up coming home in need of a tomato bath.

Bushy Tailed Rat (thanks RVF400RR). Following today's varmint theme.
