A post on
(thanks Neutronbeam) notes that yesterday was the 18th anniversary of the
launch of Steam
. The service had been previously available in beta, but
version 1.0 was indeed released on September 12,
. There's a lot of criticism these days of the Epic Games Store
and whether it
properly stacks up as a competitor to Steam
, so it's a bit ironic to look back
and see how irate gamers were about Steam at the time. There are an awful lot of
posts about canceling Half-Life 2 preorders after learning the game would
require Steam. Time certainly can heal all wounds.
Thanks Ant and Neutronbeam.
