Some controversy has arisen surrounding last
week's release of the new Siege of Dragonspear expansion for
Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition as fans react to bugs and other gameplay
issues in the add-on as well as a perceived political agenda in the game's
story.
TechRaptor has an updated story on the situation (thanks
Eurogamer) that attempts to separate the issues for clarity. One concern is
elements that reference a transgender character and a separate wisecrack saying
"Really, it's about ethics in heroic adventuring" which seem like an indirect jab at
#gamergate. Elements like these are being connected back to comments in an
interview on Kotaku where writer Amber Scott admitted to addressing some of
the sexism from the original Baldur's Gate. This led to
a post by Trent Oster asking that people post their positive impressions to
counteract the negative reviews based on these social issues. Going back to the
beginning, the complication there is that many reviews express legitimate
concerns about bugs and technical issues with the expansion, which are going to
remain negatives for many regardless of their views on the societal issues
involved.
