The folks from Consolidated Edison were busy outside the BlueTower yesterday
replacing the gas main that runs under the street. This was a little scary when
the entire surrounding area began to stink of that stuff they add to the gas so
it's detectible, but I was reassured this was all routine. It was also routine
to check our system thoroughly before restoring our gas, which was a little
nerve-wracking, as they just twisted a wrench to shut it off, but had to
follow a fairly rigorous safety checklist to turn it back on again. So it was
only after testing for leaks and the proper operation of our meter did we get
fully restored. This certainly makes sense, as natural gas leaks are incredibly
dangerous, but when the Con Ed guy explained that he was the one who had to
deliver bad news to people about repairs they might need before they could get
heat back, it provoked a little anxiety that he might have bad news for us.
Fortunately this was not the case.
