One of the lessons I learned living with Hudson the wonder dog is what being
attacked by a skunk smells like, as my late, great companion's fearless
aggression towards such critters managed to get her sprayed repeatedly over the
years. The takeaway was that the vaguely sweet/pungent smell one occasionally
encounters on the road is from a skunk that was run over, and this is actually
somewhat pleasant compared with the smell of having been sprayed directly, which
is pretty horrible. A couple of weeks ago I encountered a variation on this...
the smell had the vague distant quality of a run-over skunk, but had the sharp
nauseous element of a direct attack. This happened again this week, and I
finally put together that this was actually the Gunnar man, and the reason it
smelled so far off is because once the skunk turned on him, he must have chose
discretion over valor, getting a trace of stink during his escape. Definitely a
better option from my perspective than trying to wash away that stench.
Oh yeah... make your football picks, though you can probably take a week off and still stay ahead of me.
