Microsoft is maneuvering to acquire Minecraft creator Mojang in a deal that
could be worth more than two billion dollars, reports the
Wall Street Journal, based on information from "a person with knowledge of
the matter." This seems surprising since Mojang founder Marcus "Notch" Persson
is famous for lashing out at some of the big players in the tech industry,
including
Microsoft, but they characterize the discussions as "serious," and say a deal
could be closed as soon as this week. Neither company responded to WSJ's request
for a response to this report.
Bloomberg two-ups WSJ, saying they've heard from "three people with
knowledge of the talks," adding that Notch himself seems to have initiated these
alleged negotiations, and that he would likely leave the company if a deal is
consummated.
