Out of the Blue

Happy birthday QUAKE, as id Software's shooter was first released 17 years ago today on June 22, 1996. In recalling this I'm struck by how it came out on the cusp of all sorts of changes: It was an MS-DOS game, most of us were online using modems at the time, and no graphics cards featured 3D hardware acceleration. But within less than a year, a hardware accelerated version and a Windows version was released, and it wasn't long after that most of us were able to leave the screech of modems behind. Seems fair to say that QUAKE helped usher in a modern game era in more ways than one (it took a lot of restraint to avoid using the term "shook up" in there).
