On Sales and Discounts

A post on the Steam Forums by the developer of Lunar Flight discusses how the retail life of this indie simulator is probably at an end, saying the game's likely final update will be to add Oculus Rift support to try to capitalize on the attention that will go to the first games to use the device. As noted on Kotaku, perhaps the most interesting part of all this is his unusually frank discussion of the game's commercial success, saying he netted about $100K personally after expenses from a game that grossed about $200K after selling approximately 50K copies. In this he notes his own experience was consistent with something Valve has stated before about some games generating more income through discounts than at full-price, saying that about 75% of the game's income came from being on sale. By the way, Lunar Flight on Steam is currently 50% off. Thanks nin.
