After watching Tropes vs. Women in Video Games’ second episode, I didn’t realize the alarming propensity with which developers use this as a plot device. I have to admit it doesn’t anger me as a feminist so much as a purveyor of strong, intelligent storytelling. We’re being fed the same, cheap, easy plot device to justify our actions. This isn’t just demeaning to women, it’s demeaning to gamers in general. It’s admittedly tricky ground justifying our desire to shoot things repeatedly, but many games have managed to find ways around this.
