A post to the ArenaNet Blog talks about the activities in Guild Wars II, their upcoming MMORPG sequel. They call these activities the games within the game, and say they are a way of improving on other MMOGs that just say "This is your sword. This is its pointy end. Now go stick it in things until your numbers don’t go up anymore." Example activities they describe are bar brawls, the shooting range, and snowball fights, offering details on how each will work.
