The Boston Globe has details on a patent infringement lawsuit over use of
data sharing features in several MMORPGs, targeted at SOE over
EverQuest,
Activision Blizzard over
World of Warcraft, NCsoft over
Guild
Wars, Jagex over
Runescape, and the main focus of the article
(because they are local to Boston), Turbine (already involved in a
legal tussle with Atari over
Dungeons & Dragons Online) and
Lord of the Rings Online. A New York company named Paltalk Holdings filed
a complaint in the US District Court in Marshall, Texas, a popular locale for
patent lawsuits as it's considered plaintiff-friendly, and Paltalk already has
scored an out-of-court settlement in that venue over these same patents from a
little outfit called Microsoft.
