There is a sort of genius to be had in Egosoft’s approach to game design. Like Stanley Kubrick’s 2001, X3: Terran Conflict is brilliant just because it allows the participant to take time to marvel at the unremarkable. It is not in a rush to ram a flood of quick-action stimuli down the throat of its player. Rather, it is content to simply ask the player to slow down and experience the mundane against a remarkable backdrop.
