Presentation Summary:
Building Toward the Future: 3D Engine Technologies
Saturday, March 11, 2000, from 4:00pm-5:00pm in room A1. Please arrive early, as space is very limited!
¨ State of the Industry. As the demand for quality product rises and budgets continue to escalate, it becomes increasingly difficult for a development house to focus on every stage of product development. Hall discusses the birth and standardization of the 3D engine industry as a natural outgrowth of this dilemma. Soon, game operating systems with standardized tool sets will become as natural to our industry as the camera is to film makers.
¨ Why license an engine, and how do you choose the best one for your project? Hall discusses the key points about general engine licensing its advantages. The "build or buy?" question will be covered comprehensively, with real life examples and stories used to illustrate key points.
¨ The development of the LithTech 3D Game OS. What does it take to develop a professional 3D Game Operating System? What does it take to support such a package? Hall discusses this lengthy and elaborate development process and gives an overview of the tools and support provided by LithTech.
¨ LithTech for PlayStation2 development. The burgeoning PlayStation2 market has made an amazing impact on the PC industry. What does it take to switch from PC to console development and how can LithTech ease this process? Hall also discusses the differences between an engine port and a dedicated system created specifically for PlayStation2.
¨ Exploring new technologies in a rapidly expanding industry. Massively multiplayer games have enjoyed great success thus far, but clearly the full market for these titles remains untapped. Hall discusses the factors motivating the creation of LithTech Online and what this will mean to developers everywhere.
