Subject: QW2.1 & .mdl files

QW2.1 enables any player to check any other player's player.mdl & eyes.mdl files by using the /users & /user <#> commands respectively. This ability has been offered due to some people changing these files in order to, say, take away the advantage of the ring of shadows. If someone uses a renamed player.mdl file as their eyes.mdl file then when another player gets the ring of shadows a full player will be seen and not the teeny eyes.

So, everyone's been checking everyone's else's .mdl files like crazy. Some people's .mdl files fail the CRC checks, turn up a non-standard number, and a big "AHA!" goes out. In other words, your pmodel & emodel numbers being non-standard = you cheat!

In some cases people have indeed manipulated these files to "cheat," but this is not always the case. Some people have had altered .mdl files and never knew it. Everyone needs to be aware of at least 2 modifications out there that will change these values when installed. The crosshair add-on from Quake Marines for DM (http://www.quakemarines.com/) & the old Suck mod (http://linux.mit.edu/quake/index.html) that had a total of 42 runes will change these files. The former will cause the player.mdl to fail a CRC check, and Suck Mod actually contains an eyes.mdl file that fully replaces the eyes with a player.

Everyone ought to pay attention to these facts regarding Leagues and such since accusations are flying, and many of the accused are incredulous. If there are any other modifications that change these .mdl files then I personally would like to know and I'll list them at QHA (url below) for all to see.

I encourage everyone to check their own .mdl files and make them default in case they are not due to such add-ons. This will spare you a lot of agony over being labeled a "cheater."
