Out of the Blue

So we're sitting around over burgers and such on Saturday when it was suggested that the ceiling fan in the living room would make the room more comfortably cool. When it was turned on, a couple of our relatives more experienced in these matters pointed out that it was running backwards. I was sure that the logic behind these was to blow the hot air up towards the ceiling, but they told us this was the winter setting, and in spite of seeming counter-intuitive, the summer setting was to blow down and circulate the air. Anyone with experience with these fans will recognize that they were right about this... there's a little switch on the fan, and after reversing it, the cooling effect went from mild to dramatic. This is something I wish I had learned earlier, but better late than never, and it sure is, well, cool!

Somebody reference that episode.

Well, it's not just coincidence that whales and dolphins turn up dead, beached, and hemmhoraging from the ears (evidence of exposure to extremely loud sound) after this sonar is used. I mean, you don't have to be Jacque Cousteau to put this together. I also saw something recently where scientists have found whales in certain areas of the ocean have lost significant amounts of their hearing capacity.

240dB + animals which depend on hearing like we depend on sight = not good for them.

The navies of the world have been using sonar for decades, and nobody has come up with evidence that all the whales in the world have gone deaf or something.

True, but I doubt sonar used today is anywhere near 240db. According to the article, "That's the equivalent of standing next to a Saturn V rocket at takeoff." And they've already admitted at least 8 whales were killed in an earlier test.

I don't want to come off like a crazy environmentalist (too late, I know) but that just seems totally excessive. Hell, if it's going to be 240db, why not just classify it as a weapon and use it directly on subs? It'd make everyone inside the thing deaf anyway...

Things to play at 240db and make "terrorist" sealife deaf:

AC/DC: Highway to Hell
Celion Deion: anything, but especially that Titanic song and that damn "I Drove all Night" cover
NWA: Straight Outta Compton and F$&^* the Police
Kenny G: anything <nin ducks for cover>

Different animals have different sensitivities to sound. Heck, I thought cats were sensitive to sound, but every time I watch a loud movie on my 5.1, one of my cats comes out and sits on either the subwoofer or a front channel speaker! Loud for me is right below that level where you think "Ow, that hurts!"

The navies of the world have been using sonar for decades, and nobody has come up with evidence that all the whales in the world have gone deaf or something.

Unless there is evidence that this DOES harm whales or some other creature, there is no reason to prohibit this sonar's use. I don't expect enviromentalists to be enlightened (if only!), but hopefully the court will not just rule on the side of conjecture.

Even though the fan is pushing hot air, it will feel cool on your skin due to the wind chill effect. It's easy to demonstrate. Blow on your hand hard enough and it will feel cool, even though you're blowing air that's around body temperature.

So how goes the sound card?

So far, quite well. I put an update in yesterdays thread about the latest T-Beach drivers (thanking you, among others), but you might not have caught it. So far it works great in XP, and the one game I've had a chance to throw at it (Rise of Nations) sounds exactly as it did on the SB. DVD playback also sounds great (I use PowerDVD and it picked up and worked with the card fine). Still gotta try Audiograbber (my mp3 ripper) but it picked up the card fine also.

I've just about got all my apps loaded, so more game installs will be next. I gotta get back into Vice City, and I'll be curious if I can finally get a decent frame rate in Morrowind. But so far, everythings peachy!

Thanks again for the tip!

It's sorta like a Jeff Foxworthy routine, Halsey.

You might be a terrorist if...<insert here>

I agree, it is way over used, and it's out of control...

Sniper? Terrorist.

Computer hacker? Terrorist.

Subjacker? Terrorist.

Question Bonzo's Monkey Boy's administration policies? Oh, now that's definitely a terrorist!

(And yes, that last one was sarcasm, except for the Monkey Boy part, which was dead serious. EEEK EEEK OOP OOP! You're a terrorist. )

Talk about crying wolf. The Bush junta and the Military are just using the word terrorism way too much.
Now I see they're trying to prosecute John Allen Muhammad (the sniper suspect) under the Patriot Act as a terrorist.
The guy is a crook, his motivation was money, not politics. He wanted money to stop. That doesn't make him a terrorist, just a scumbag, regardless if he's muslim or isn't.
I suppose the must keep the sheeple scared stiff in hopes that shrub gets re-elected and the military keeps getting its absurd amount of cash.
Since 1980 the Military Industrial & Intelligence Complex has received over 4 trillion dollars, whereas by comparison Education and social spending has received about 300 billion dollars.
That's just sick. Time to get some priorities straightened out.
