The other day someone wrote a browser plug in that hides comments with certain keywords. It should be possible to leverage that tech to convert the time stamps, I would thing. No need for Blue and Frans to do anything.

There is indeed no way to set a custom time zone for comments. After hashing through the implications, I don't think this is something that will change in the foreseeable future. Here's our reasoning:

• The news page uses Eastern Time. It would be a larger undertaking to convert that to local times, and having the main part of the site using different times than the forums would be confusing.
• There are over a million comments in the database. That's a big data conversion project.
• Most significantly, this is the only time this has come up in all these years, and no one else has commented on this since you brought it up. So there doesn't seem to be a lot of demand for this. It doesn't feel like there's enough payoff for a project that would take up a large chunk of Frans' time, which is a limited resource.
