A lot of my reading is from mobile devices these days. Not trying to be a dick but there are so many free CSS/mobile design resources out there I'm shocked it hasn't happened already. Shit it isn't even expensive to hire out anymore and I'm sure people here would be happy to participate in a site update fundraiser. At least half of the current site features are entirely deprecated and wouldn't need to be replicated. Just fixing the CSS is something very approachable that shouldn't take more than a weekend of farting around.

Another consideration is that at some point Google is going to flip the switch on prioritizing mobile friendly sites (if they haven't already) and this site would be very offside. Similar situation with advertising placements.

Google mobile test.

Retro is fun and everything but man, there's so many benefits to a modern refresh.

do we have the ability for atleast another color set? Aside from the needing to thumb scale some paragraphs of text, only the headlines dark blue on black is still the impossible to read part. Yellow and white is very readable, how about light blue or orange?

Maybe someone can make a m.bluesnews.com mobile friendly version off the current system?

That would require access to the back end. I mean I could make a simple one that loaded however you guys like based off the RSS or that-which-must-not-be-named (WAP), but that would be headlines or headlines and a brief snippet. You would still need the full site to see the whole post and any comments.

So in other words, no one can be bothered with installing newer software. My only guess is you want to preserve the sites previous data, but that is neither a fix or workaround. Also how are security updates for software that is no longer updated?

My understanding is that the content management system is custom, and is maintained by Frans but no significant new features are added. The server software is pretty standard, and is updated regularly.
That understanding is correct. The CMS is called Blammo, btw. I think (hope) I locked down any possible backdoors, SQL injection points, etc. But at any rate, because it is custom, at least script kiddies and other common hack attempts are futile, and have been for 19 years. Our Apache log is testament to this not being for lack of trying.

I was just a little bit wary back when I posted this comment

While the mobile and PDA links have been wonky forever, I have almost no issue browsing the site on mobile. If you do, one thing to consider is the RSS feed. Google seems to want RSS dead for whatever reason, but it is still kicking and plenty of mobile feed clients exist.

A big part of the problem on mobile is that some of the fonts (like article titles) have absolute sizes, measured in pixels, which are tiny on mobile devices. Other fonts (like article bodies) have relative sizes, so they are a good size on any device. An update to the CSS would help a lot, and wouldn't be too painful to implement.

"Can't be bothered." LoL. Blue's is a one man show my friend. Maybe after the move Blue will have some bandwidth (and a spot of extra cash) to look into it, but that's a ways off.

I agree that it would be nice to see some love given to a more phone friendly version of Bluesnews - being more and more people view the internet on phones.

I am surprised this hasn't been brought up by anyone, but blues news is actually a pain to read on my galaxy's chrome browser. With only 2 color schemes, white on blue is impossible to read with the blue headlines, and white on black is only a touch better. The biggest issue is the topics for all the news post are considerable smaller than the body text. Lastly is some of the formatting, namely the "Out of the blue" is just micro sized.

I had this problem until I got my new phone. It's better, but far from perfect. Stories and comments are easier to read jumping into individual stories. The main page is the worst.

That being said, Blues News is built on a 20 year old blog client. It's unlikely to be refactored for mobile in the near future. My solution was to get a bigger phone (6").
