THE LAST JEDI - KEVIN SMITH'S REVIEW
1.5 hours, if you watch it let me know what's in it.

EDIT: Attempted to watch it, there is not enough pot in the world to sit through that blather.

Yeah, I couldn't make it past the first five minutes. Just fucking get on with it and say what you have to say. He clears his throat for an eternity and when he finally says something about the supposed subject of his video, he says: "Of course I liked it."

Yeah. Of course he did.

Nice to know I'm not the only one who feels this way, RedEye9.

I continue to be baffled by the near universal critical acclaim TLJ is receiving. I've seen people assert that critics are afraid of angering Disney but I'm not sure that explanation makes sense to me.

That's The Last Jedi in a nutshell. Sounds like we saw the same movie.

Been lurking here forever, though I've posted a few times. The critical comments in this thread made me feel much better about humanity in general, because if everyone agreed that this was a good movie ... all hope in humanity would be lost.

Say you are watching a viking movie. It's a viking movie, with vikings, set in viking times. With me so far? And there's a big battle, and during the big battle, one of the vikings pulls out a ... light saber! Cool, right? Just like, totally unexpected and bad ass!

I fear there is a significant subset of the population that would, in fact, think this this was cool and bad ass, offering arguments as seen from some in this thread like: "It was great because I didn't expect it!"

If Jedis can survive in a zero oxygen space environment, if they can fly through that environment (why do they even need spaceships?), if they can astral project, etc, etc--then they aren't "Jedis" anymore. They're just ... magical super people, unbound by any limitations or their own traditions or anything. When "magic" is the answer to any question about how something incredible happened in a movie, you've got a totally bullshit movie on your hands.

If Luke Skywalker can sense that the SON OF HIS FRIEND Han Solo is going to turn bad later and decide to KILL HIM IN HIS SLEEP just like that, then ... he isn't Luke Skywalker anymore. He's just some other, made up character with an entirely different moral code than Skywalker's.

If Yoda can torch the library containing all the written knowledge and history of the Jedi Knights because "Rey knows it all anyway" then who needs knowledge or history or training or anything? In a way this was the scene that encapsulates much of what was wrong with The Last Jedi. At its core it's a just a deeply stupid, deeply anti-intellectual movie.

Watching this movie was like watching little kids play with Star Wars figures for two and a half hours. "Oh, wouldn't it be cool if Leia got blown out of the ship and then flew back into the ship using The Force!" But--you guys, there's no oxygen in space, how is she going to breathe? "So what, Dad! It would be cool! Oh, I know, what if Luke tries to kill Kylo Ren but then Kylo Ren blocks him with his Laser Sword and makes the whole hut EXPLODE!" But, you guys, that's totally out of character for who Luke is ... Also, no one calls them 'laser swords,' they're called ..."Who cares, Dad!" Etc etc.

It was also two and half hours of climaxes strung together back to back to garner audience applause with little narrative sense and not a single second of honest, earned human emotion.

'Last Jedi' Grosses Are Collapsing With The Worst Daily Holds Of All 9 Star Wars Movies
Surprised i say, surprised.

That's a bummer. It's the most interesting film since the original trilogy, even with its faults. That means they'll take Rian Johnson's original trilogy away. Not that he'll care too much. He'll just go back to writing and directing excellent indie films.

It also means that all future Star Wars movies will be soulless predictable schlock directed by the likes of JJ Abrams and Michael Bay.

It means that maybe fans don't want a 'dark' film in their favorite series (or trilogy) just for the sake of being 'dark'. I really think that was one of the thought processes behind this film.

'Empire was dark, so we have to be...usually the second in a trilogy is dark, so we have to be'. No.

'We have to be 'different' and 'unexpected' because it's never been done in a Star Wars film before!'. No.

'The fans wanted something different and not just a rehash of the old stuff in a new wrapper'. Eh...kinda?

Rogue One did a good job of taking established canon and making an original, exciting story out of it. The more times I watch it, the more I like it (and not just because it's set in the OT time period). Sure, they threw Vader in for 'fan service' but what they did with him was awesome and considered one of the best bad-ass scenes with the character. And it apparently came at the last minute and almost didn't end up in the film at all.

TLJ feels like Johnson didn't understand what made the OT great. Yeah, it was 80's camp at times but it also made you feel good to watch it, even Empire. At the end of RotJ, what did you feel? How did you think it would continue had the series kept going from there? I'm willing to bet that no one considered it'd be anything like it is in TLJ. The EU books/novels show this to be true. Even if they themselves got damn dark during the Vong era and got stuck in a loop of rebuilding the Republic (or something like it) only to tear it down again over and over, the first ten years or so of the EU was great, exciting and hopeful. Everything made sense (eh, for the most part) as to what happened to the characters after the films. They didn't all fall into mid-life depressions and go off to become hermits/space truckers. What I'm saying is that it didn't have to be deep, dark and depressing to be entertaining.

And we don't have to kill off everyone to get a clean slate with new characters, dammit! Stop killing my heroes for lulz!

I think a lot of people are miffed about the whole 'everything is unexpected' because up until now, you've been made to think and expect a certain way for Star Wars movies to go. You can't fault fans for being more upset about it being totally not what they thought it would be when Ep 7 had so much fan service and callbacks. If Ep7 had been a totally unexpected start to a new trilogy, a complete break (or almost), then Ep 8 would have gone down easier. You can't bait and switch and expect people to be 100% with it, especially with the history Star Wars has (both in universe and out).

I haven't seen the movie but I've watched all the reviews and spoilers and everything. I've gotten the gist of what happens. I can say that, really, the only things that bother me, like truly, are the ways Luke is handled. YT's Star Wars Theory put out a video the day after the movie came out with his first thoughts on the movie and it made sense. Basically, it mirrored what I wanted to see: a strong, triumphant Luke coming back from obscurity, finding the power he had long ago that he used to defeat Vader and taking the fight to the First Order. Picking up the mantle once again. Only, that's totally not what we get. Yes, it's personal, some people like this direction they took. But this is sci-fi, fantasy, and we don't have to have our heroes grow old and grumpy and guarded. The video explains it better than I, atm. They psyched us up the whole time in TFA, the whole point was to get to Luke and...yeah.

Oh, and the way they took Ackbar out is bullshit. Pure and utter bullshit. Again, science fantasy, guys! Everyone doesn't have to go out realistically like a bitch. He should've been the one to hyper that cruiser into the ship. What a fitting end that would've been. Star Wars are like a visual novel and you want your heroes to have fitting ends, if they must go. Things are just a little too down-to-earth here for my taste.

=-Rigs-=

just saw it myself. i agree with all the gripes. this was just sophomoric trash even if it was entertaining to watch.

my main gripes: they still don't explain how rey acquired the skills of a jedi knight in the space of like a week. personally i always felt that was jarjar abrams flinging cool shit at the screen and not giving a fuck about "making sense". still, if this was adequately explained in 9 (which i doubt) i would be cool with it.

my unforgivable gripe: they STILL haven't given me any reason to give a shit about kylo ren, and it's a fucking tragedy because i think adam driver does fantastic work as a conflicted villain.

when your audience is as emotionally invested as star wars fans are, you can for sure expect us to care about han and leia's son. so them just glossing over WHY HE'S THE BAD GUY is kind of a fucking major oversight. i get it - snoke dark side mumbo jumbo. no. this is something that NEEDED to be depicted on screen because it's vitally important to a central character of the story. this is just more of JJ's mystery box bullshit when in fact it needed to be explained in TFA because its absence completely robbed han's murder of any emotional impact more than extreme confusion.

Not at all. I pretty much agree with everything he said. We're discussing spoilers, and the fact a bunch of those spoilers were completely unexpected/out of the norm for Star Wars movies is what made it a superior film to TFA, despite TLJ's flaws.
