Steamships Ahoy - Trine [Updated]

Steam is now offering digital distribution of Trine, Frozenbyte's action/platformer with a fantasy theme. Update: This story initially described the price listed as $19.99, but it is now $29.99, as apparently the lower price was an error which was quickly corrected. Anyway, a playable Trine demo was released last week for your tryin' Trine pleasure, and here is a general overview of the game:
Trine is a fantasy action game where the player can create and use physics-based objects to beat hazardous puzzles and threatening enemies. Set in a world of great castles and strange machinery, three heroes are bound to a mysterious device called the Trine in a quest to save the kingdom from evil…

The gameplay is based on fully interactive physics - each character's different abilities help the player battle an army of undead and defeat hazardous contraptions. The player can at any time freely choose whoever is best suited for the upcoming challenge or puzzle: The Wizard is able to summon objects to help solve puzzles and create new ways to overcome obstacles, the Thief uses her agility and dead-on accuracy to swiftly surprise the monsters, and the Knight unleashes mayhem and physical destruction wherever he goes.

kxmode, apparently you’ve never spent any time on their forums or had any lengthy discussions with them, so please keep to yourself you have no knowledge about them as I do and many others who have disused this topic at length.

Darks, nobody gives a shit what you've discussed with some other people on some forum on the internet and nobody else is deluded enough to think that you and a few other people on said forum constitute a majority on the topic. Do you have any idea how much of a douche you come off as? Every time I read one of your posts I picture the fat unwashed 25 year old dork in the back of Gamestop arguing with a 10-year old about which pokemon is better because dude, they don't even know, they haven't seen the shit you have.

Even the discussions you're talking about were a few people fanboy ranting, developers trying to respond rationally, and then the internet equivalent of putting your fingers in your ears and yelling "LA LA LA LA" intermixed with "GRAWR CONSOELS!". Just give it up already.

When I first ran the demo, it ran poorly. Then I quit and reloaded it and it ran like butter. Rather strange.

The demo was a lot of fun, but it inexplicably ran like shit.

8800GTX on 185.85, max settings (which includes like a whopping 4x fsaa). I think it was like smoke or particular lighting effects that were bogging down the frame rate, as it wasn't a constant problem.

Whether it's worth $30 will depend entirely on its length, and whether or not the game manages to stay fresh throughout. The demo gives me the impression that the game will not be able to vary gameplay mechanics enough, and the puzzles are a far cry from thought provoking. It's not Portal, and it's definitely not Braid in that regard.

I'm not saying you could actually win by suing someone over their criticism; I'm saying only that you could try, and that it has been tried enough that people would consider it. This is the United States, guys! We can all sue each other for anything under the sun.
Huh? I'm sorry, I was thinking about cake.

Linking the Wiki article but not actually reading it: FAIL!

I read the article and I missed the correct terminology where it's called libelous; something Blue caught me on. Thanks Blue.

Correct, Blue. Libel refers to print, and slander the spoken word. And no, it's not libelous to put forth a negative opinion of someone. That's protected speech under the 1st Amendment. You would have to prove that the contended statement was not only untrue, but has caused you some sort of harm and/or financial hardship because of it. That's tough to do at the best of times. It generally needs to be a lot more explicit and a good deal of money involved.

For example, I say that I believe the president of ABC corporation is a selfish-jerk, I'm entitled to that opinion. However, if I state that no one should buy any products from ABC company because their president is a embezzler and a pedophile than I can get sued.

Calling them lazy is slanderous. Period.

I doubt that this is actually actionable, but I am not a lawyer. I do know, however, that it it were, in this case it would be libelous, not slanderous.

It's a valid point - criticism is one of those things you can get sued for, even if it's true. Not that anyone in a Blue's forum will get sued for criticizing a developer or we'd all have sold our computers to pay the damages.
Huh? I'm sorry, I was thinking about cake.

They are a lazy developer

You need to stop right there. That's a slanderous statement. I bet they worked very hard on this game.

Blue, Prez is right, Frozenbyte is saying the asking price of $19.99 was a mistake that seems to have been fixed. The listed price is $29.99.

Oh well...
