Why No Ghostbusters PC MP

Big Download contacted Atari about the absence of multiplayer support in the PC edition of Ghostbusters, and Atari passed along a statement from Dan Irish, CEO Threewave Software, who created the game's console multiplayer component. The obvious reason for this is that the console editions were a higher priority, but at least he comes out and admits that. Here's that bit:
Multiplayer for the PC version of Ghostbusters is something that Threewave and Terminal Reality always wanted to do. However, our focus was on making the console version the best that they could be - an experience that allows multiple players to re-live and re-fight many of the themes from the movies. When we looked at the resources necessary to pull off multiplayer on the consoles and the PC, it became a question of what could we do and still be excellent in our execution.

So basically PC was a half-assed afterthought because the console version was more important. Check.

My words exactly Morgan. To add to that I think Atari could save face by outright removing DRM to make up for the lack of MP. I realize free of DRM does not equal the scope of MP. Atari knows DRM doesn't stop the piracy. In fact the irony of this is that there are more pirates downloading the console versions. But in retrospect, what can you expect from the company that single handedly caused the video game crash of 1984?

Hey Dan Irish remember when Threewave made their bones on PC games like Quake? Without PC gaming Threewave wouldn't exist. Thanks for all the love, buddy! They could've worked on PC version at the same time as consoles and I'm sure it wouldn't of took up that much more time. What a prick.

Atari now does not equal Atari then. Atari now is Infogrames, a French company that bought the rights to the name because Atari means more to American gamers than Infogrames does.

lets not forget we're talking about Atari.....the same brillient group of suits who took out the only good part of Unreal 2.....the multiplayer.

To be fair, Epic had a hand in that decision as well (possibly because Legend had come up with some great MP ideas that it would've damaged CliffyB's ego)

I'm passing on this, even if I was looking forward to it. Fuck you Atari, and you disappoint Threewave. You cut your teeth on PC multiplayer. Unless you patch in 'solid' multiplayer, you won't get my $30.

Yeah, we can get the game at half the price of the console versions so that's nice. Also guys I'd say to hold off judgment until the multiplayer gets a dedicated review. The multiplayer might suck.

Though for me, these days, multiplayer is where the real fun is at. Single player games with their story driven content seem trite.

I'd like to see someone hack multiplayer into it, much like has been done with the old 80's 8bit single player games or GTA III:SA.

i would rather have a solid console port (dirty word, i know but it is what it is.) than something lame with half-baked multiplayer. (Shadowrun, i'm looking right at you.) i appreciate the cost savings, so enh i'll probably bite at somepoint, based on nostalgia alone if nothing else.

They cut the price in half to make up for a lack of multiplayer. Big freakin deal. Like anyone would have given a shit about multiplayer in the first place.

I gave a shit. Cooperative multiplayer is hard to come by, so much that even mediocre games with cooperative become more appealing. It's nice that the PC version is half the cost without it, but I'd rather have paid $50 with it.
Huh? I'm sorry, I was thinking about cake.

I'm pretty sure Threewave didn't have any say in the matter. Things like this always revolve around the publisher. Threewave likely said "Hey, we can get PC multiplayer in but we'll need to hire more programmers and testers. Or the PC version will need to be delayed a few weeks." At which point, Atari likely said "Fuck it. Cut the PC multiplayer. We'll just sell the PC version for less than the other versions."

They cut the price in half to make up for a lack of multiplayer.

Not exactly. PC games always sell for at least $10 less than console games. Ports of games appearing on many platforms usually sell for $20 less. I'm betting the original idea was to sell the PC version for $39.95.
