Max Payne 3 Details

IGN has an article based on the Game Informer cover story on Max Payne 3, Remedy's upcoming shooter sequel. They confirm previously mentioned details like the setting of Sao Paulo, Brazil, Max's new older appearance, the addition of a cover system, and more. They also say the game will use Rockstar's RAGE (Grand Theft Auto IV) and will include a new version of bullet time called "environmental bullet time." They conclude saying: "What Game Informer seemed most impressed by were the animations and attention to detail in the environments, which were said to enhance the gunplay and feel of the game. While hardly anything was said about the multiplayer, it was confirmed that there will be an online component in the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC version of the game."

In 11 months they'll announce that the title of the game is changing to Gears of Payne, and will include Max creating the first suit of powered space marine armor, as he takes cover behind chest-high walls before killing his enemies with a chainsaw.

I hope Euphoria doesn't make the controls loose and sluggish like they were in GTA4. I can't really play that game because of that. Sure, it looks more realistic but I don't really care about that. I want tight, responsive and precise controls, like in the first two Max Paynes.

I've been using cover systems for years - I find something bulletproof and stand behind it.
Huh? I'm sorry, I was thinking about cake.

I'm really looking forward to shooting enemies in slow motion considering the Euphoria engine is involved.

BTW, cover system is completely optional. If you don't like cover systems, just play MP3 how you played MP1/2

Max Payne was always a console game at heart; it just came out on PC first.

You're kidding? Please tell me you're kidding? Their RAGE engine doesn't use GPUs? AT ALL?
It's so CPU bound as to make graphics largely irrelevant - setting all graphics to minimum barely increases the framerate. It's not like you can even apply anti-aliasing either. Despite that they still don't even allow you to max out the graphics because they've imposed an artificial limiter, which can be bypassed outside of the game. Then you can load High quality textures. However, the game is so appalling at loading textures that even within that limit I find them fading in and out in front of me. There seems to be a memory leak, as the longer I play the more likely it is to occur. That's if the textures load at all - sometimes I have to restart the game several times or else 90% of the textures are missing and I can see cars and pedestrians through the walls. Not only that but when I'm speeding along some objects only appear when I'm right on top of them, resulting in me colliding with a fire hydrant and flying out the front of my windscreen.

It has the graphical fidelity of a game from 2003, with performance that makes you want to cry. Crysis Warhead runs better for me. Not only that but they don't have any smoothing on the mouse, which only highlights the lower performance - if you use an X360 controller then it better masks the lower performance. And cars handle terribly on KB&M, being especially twitchy at high speeds. That means I end up using the X360 controller all the time, which is terrible for aiming (though helped from the auto-targeting system).

The game is a wreck, even with the latest patch. It's great fun when it works, mostly (despite some irritating gameplay decisions), and if it performed properly then I'd be happy with it as a game but it was definitely a disappointing purchase.

You mean you're hoping they're going to rewrite the engine to actually take advantage of graphics cards instead of being entirely CPU bound?

Ugh. The RAGE thing is very disappointing. I guess I'll just have to look forward to playing it at 1024x768 with no AA and all of the details set to low.
The engine is so poorly optimised that it makes little difference what your visual settings are set to, so there's no point turning them down.

Maybe they've sorted some stuff out though.
You mean you're hoping they're going to rewrite the engine to actually take advantage of graphics cards instead of being entirely CPU bound? Nah, seems unlikely. It's a real shame, as engines like those for Assassin's Creed, GRID and Far Cry 2 demonstrate that multiplatform games can still take full advantage of the PC as a platform. There's no excuse for the shit performance of the RAGE engine on PC.

Maybe they've sorted some stuff out though.

Um unless you didn't buy it on Steam then the 'fact' would be you need as many as two then right?
That's still two pieces of crapware I don't want on my system.

That shit should be nuked from orbit.

It's the only way to be sure.

I have high hopes for MP3, but Remedy not being involved is a serious problem. Perhaps it will at least be longer than the two blinks and a fart that was Max Payne 2.

São Paulo? WTH?

(For the record, I'm brazilian, and I've been to São Paulo quite a few times. It's a big, violent city, but it doesn't go well with noir, or with the kind of plot that we had in Max Payne 1 and 2)

Agreed, RAGE runs fine on consoles, no so much on PCs. The fact that you need as many as three middleware products to get GTA4 running on the PC (Steam, Rockstar Social Club, AND GFWL) is absurd.
