On ARMA II Bugs

German site PC Games reports on bugginess in the German edition of ARMA II, Bohemia Interactive Studios' military shooter sequel slated for release in that country tomorrow. Word is a patch is being readied for release tomorrow along with the release, and here is what Bohemia Interactive CEO Marek Spanel says about the situation:
We realize that the campaign maybe doesn't stand to your expectations but we hope that all the improvements made for the first patch will already make it much closer to what you hoped it will be initially. I just played German version 1.00 today to try some of the situations you mentioned enjoyed it despite I found a problem here or there. I'm personally not humiliated by my team mates sometimes fighting better than I do, and if something goes wrong or unexpected this game is so complex that often there is a way to find another solution of your current mission. Also, what is quite unusual is that some things happen completely differently every time I try a mission. I think the bugs do not kill the open nature of the game and that sheer scope, amount of content or beautiful country of Chernarus will more than compensate for these issues.

I view a huge game with infinite choices in a different light than a focused, more linear game. I can tolerate bugs in the former game - it is practically inevitable that something will be broken, glitchy, or quirky in such an immense undertaking. In general, I'm satisfied if most things work most of the time. In the case of the latter type of game, however, bugs are far less easy for me to forgive.

Sure, the bugs are probably horrible, but theres something you guys forget all the time: BIS is very small and doesnt have much money. They are doing a hell of a job for the size of that team. It will be patched, but it will take longer than a multibillion company would take.

And seriously, I rather have a developer that still does PC games (though buggy for a few months) than some POS company like EA, Ubi etc that only do simplistic console crap and port it to the PC with a DRM.
I have given up on waiting for BIS to come back to their senses and do a real ArmA 2 successor.

This needs to be reported as "On ArmA II German release". I didn't know Blues is so interested in the international versions and the states they are in.

This is the web and the web isn't restricted to the USA is probably why. Blues has many international readers judging by how many people complain about international pricing on games in forum threads here.

Last time ArmA was released to the US, it was released in a pretty stable state only a few outstanding bugs. People who are having crashes and other problems aren't issues with the game itself but their configurations or drivers.

By the time this gets released to the US, it more than likely won't be in such a state that the German version is and word is the German patch is already coming out next week. Just sounds like the German version got rushed into Gold.

Guess I'll have to buy it & see for myself.

People said the same thing about Stalker:CS but on my end the only bug was that the game started minimised on occasion forcing me to quit the game & restart it.

It's hard being the best military sim on the market, but these guys know what they are doing. ArmA1 is without competition, and the 1.16 patch really fixed the speed issues. Granted, you have to have multiple cores and a decent GPU, but this is hardcore. You have to bring the right toys to the party. If you do, you will be rewarded with the best military sandbox game ever made.

I suprprised no one noticed that the devs remarks are based on play with the unpatched 1.0 version of the game. The PATCH for the game is being released simultaneously with the game and might actually improve a lot of issues with the game.

On the other hand it might break other stuff, but still. Im willing to give these guys the benefit of the doubt.

You will be waiting 2+ years

I'm in no hurry.

In fact, with the way games come down in price so easily nowadays, I'm heavily thinking about never buying anything full price anymore.

As for ARMA2, I refuse to buy broken product. I'll pick this up when it's 20 bucks and patched.

You will be waiting 2+ years. BIS is absolutely horrible patching games. It takes them years to do what most developers do in months.

Same applies to all those tools getting Windows 7 on day one. Why? It will be crap.

While I don't disagree with your general premise, the Windows 7 RC is a really solid OS. I'm running it on my laptop and the ONLY problem I have is that Plants vs Zombies freezes for ~ 10 seconds every now and then, completely at random. If I Alt-Tab out and go back in, the issue tends to disappear completely for that entire session.

All other games I've tried on it run solid. I've had no other issues whatsoever. (okay, I had one issue that came from upgrading the beta to the RC, which was not recommended by MS, and which caused me to reapply file permissions to a bunch of folders.)

So I think that comparing Win7 to ARMA2 is probably not the greatest comparison in the world.

As for ARMA2, I refuse to buy broken product. I'll pick this up when it's 20 bucks and patched.

Bugs schmugs. This is the #1 reason I and many people pirate. I pirate simply to see if I like the game, if I do, I buy it

So which is it? Do you pirate because of bugs or to see if you like the game? Is it possible to like a buggy game? I've 'tried' games that I didn't like that seemed bug-free.
