The 64-bit freebie Win7 takes up 11.3 GB on my system. I installed with all the defaults and haven't installed much of anything else. I have no idea why an OS needs 11 GB, even if it is 'Ultimate'. I could dig through the subdirectories and get a better idea, but eh. I'll only be buying the cheapest decent version (probably the one just past Basic) and using it to run DX 10+ games. Although the network stack is clearly faster in Win7, everything else is clearly slower. And MS's mystical DRM schemes, while not as draconian as they could be, are still awfully mysterious.

A standard Win7 install is ~16GB! Where did all of this bloat come from?

I've been running Win7 installed on my 4GB SSD. I don't know where this 16GB estimate came from.

Gee, governments grant monopolies and then customer service tanks. It's widespread stupidity across the nation to grant monopolies so universally. Corporatism fail.

What I want to know is will this Win7 for "netbooks" be trimmed down to fit on smaller SSD drives? I prefer SSD for netbook usage for durability since it's so easy to drop such a small machine. A standard Win7 install is ~16GB! Where did all of this bloat come from? I don't know about Vista since I have never installed it since I bought it.

When I put a fresh install of XP Home SP3 on my Eee 901, installed all Windows Update and system drivers, the total space used was just over 1GB.

I installed a 32GB SSD in my Eee 901, but with Windows and the programs I use, I'm still only using 3GB of space. I use the extra space at times when I travel to copy some TV shows or movies to watch, or store digital pictures until I get home. I previously carried a 2.5" external HD for that, but now I don't need too.

If/when I upgrade to a newer netbook that comes with Win7 or if I decide to install Win7 on my current Eee 901, that's going to cut into my storage space.
