Out of the Blue

I haven't been able to find any locally yet, but WalterEgo brought me some of that throwback Mountain Dew made with real sugar when he visited, as I am not a fan of high-fructose corn syrup. I don't drink that much soda anymore, but I want to purchase as much of this as possible to support the real sugar movement. The Mountain Dew is noticeably different with the sugar, and while there is also throwback Pepsi, that's, well, Pepsi. What I really want is some Coca Cola using real sugar, just like when I was a ki... err, I mean like my parents say they used to have in the old days.

whats baffling is why they picked such an obviously amateur director for a movie that should have gotten the best names in the business.

meh, I liked the Terminator series but I wasn't exactly crazy about it so no loss here.

Terminator is pegged so far as worse than Wolverine...

Special effects are fine as the only selling point of, say, a Transformers movie. They are not fine as the only selling point of a Terminator.

Saw Terminator Salvation and it was a good film but so far I really hadn't seen any remarkable films yet this Summer. District 9 looks exceptional though.

Jones Soda FTW.

Funny too, because in my film class we were just talking about this. There's a large local population of hispanics (as yakima is about 20 minutes from here), and all the stores will either stock mexican sodas or mexican versions of american sodas, and theres a world of difference.

Hey Warhawk, i'm hearing some pretty bad reviews about Terminator. For the people that enjoyed it, it's for pure action and special effects, but the overall movie is supposed to be pretty bad. Yet another ding on McG's list. It disappoints me because i was really looking forward to it. I'll still see it though.

Too bad. We'll go see it anyways, but maybe lowered expectations will help me enjoy it more.

I would say it's neither good nor bad. I've seen far worse movies (like Wolverine!), yet there wasn't much to get excited about, either. Very bland. I will say that what's his name, who played Chekov in Trek, actually does make a good (believable) Kyle Reese.

SST: There was a bit of excitement when "Arnold" showed up, and that particular part was very well done, for CGI work, but that doesn't save the last hour and a half.

In other, unrelated news, I'd like to throw this on the table:

I just chipped in my $10. In under 24 hours, fans have raised over $260,000 to help a guy needing a heart transplant. Feel free to chip in...

Thankfully I never got into the habit of drinking soda (probably because I was homeschooled up until college). I drank a decent amount of it in college, but before and after my consumption was/is about one soda a month on average.

Still, HFCS is in almost everything these days. My wife and I try to avoid it as much as possible. I'm not a big fan of artificial sweetener either, but it's also hard to avoid. It took me a while to catch on to marketing speak - "Sugar-free" usually means artificial sweetener, while "Natural" usually means Sugar/sweetener free.

When I need a little caffeine, I stick with green tea. At least that's fairly healthy.

I'd love to compare sugar coke with fructose coke to see what the difference is but here in Europe we only have the sugar variety. Not that I have coke all that often and when I do it's usually the concentrated version used in fast food places, where I tend to find the extra caffeine really gets to me if I have too much. Personally I'd rather drink diet to avoid the excessive calorie content of regular coke but I've never been able to get over the taste - Pepsi Max is the only diet drink I can tolerate. Isn't there a new non-bitter artificial sweeter that manufacturers have been scrambling over? I wonder when that's going to make it to market.

Oddly enough I was just watching a brilliant documentary on PBS all about corn, the corn business and high-fructose corn syrup not too long ago, titled King Corn - kingcorn.net. It's well worth watching, as it's pretty edifying, not to mention somewhat scary. HFCS is in just about everything these days, it's as bad as the drastic over-use of sodium in all things. It's one of the reasons I never use salt on anything except when I'm cooking with whole natural foods, but I'll never use it with anything processed or eating out. Same with sugar. I don't even keep refined sugar in the house - just honey, and I'll only use cane/raw sugar when I'm out.

If you haven't seen King Corn, do, it's really damned interesting.

Im not into these conspiracy theories and whatnot, but isnt sugar PROVEN to be bad for you?

refined sugar is.. natural sugars are essential for brain health, thats why they taste good - its why you want to eat sweet stuff

high fructose corn syrup is even worse than refined sugar, tho

and yeh - i remember when i was a tiny toddler, MD came in a six-pack of bottles - this is what mountain dew used to taste like around 80-81

Ditto the Costco connection for what you need, Blue.

BTW, anyone see the new Terminator yet? I am going to take tomorrow off work for various reasons and figured catching that flick would be top on the list.
