Age of Conan Turns One

Age of Conan is turning one year old, and according to Funcom, they are "seeing a significant increase in players and new customers per month. Activity levels have risen significantly, and the communities are thriving with more and more players finding their way into the game." The new Age of Conan Newsletter focuses on this week's celebrations of the first anniversary of the launch of the barbaric MMORPG: Included is a letter looking back at a year of operations from Game Director Craig Morrison, word on free fireworks with which to celebrate, a screenshot contest and other competitions, an outline of plans to add an additional character slot in update 5, and more.

You know you can get 80gb hard-drives for like $35 right? Or are you on a Laptop? You can get a USB external 80gb harddrive for about $5 more.

I have a laptop. My laptop doesn't have a eSATA port.

Can you still accidentally sell your horse while you are riding it, zone and suddenly wonder wtf happened to your horse? How's the gold spammers? People still grief and exploit? What did they do for level 80s as a place to farm other than that god forsaken desert zone with only a few good camps that everyone fights over? Did they ever fix siege battles to enjoyable and functional? Did they ever flesh out player owned cities to be what they had envisioned versus what little got implemented at release? I have more questions, and did like the game, but it had some whopper problems that would require an expansion of large proportions to resolve. The healing system was pretty meh and raiding was pretty confusing and laggy. Raid areas and dungeons always felt confined and clausterphobic with the amount of people involved. Itemization seriously needed help. It had some pretty cool classes and the combat was good. I will probably revisit it when they release a good expansion.
PS3 resurgance by GOW3 - Check! Mass Effect for PS3 - Check! Diablo 3 for consoles? I say "For sure"!

I got the 7 day trial and played for... 2 days.

It's 100% like every other MMO except with 50% more button mashing.

I think tortage is as much a benefit as a burdon. Your impressions of the game are an easy conclusion to reach because the game is somewhat linear as you play up to lvl 80. The scenery changes a lot as you progress but at the beginning the game feels somewhat bland as you struggle through tortage.

The game gets a lot better after tortage and through all the different zones. I came to love the game around level 40. Once you get a horse and can travel a lot faster visiting all kinds of places becomes possible and it's spectacular.

I've resubbed recently, and I'm really enjoying the game. I hope the changes in 1.05 will improve pvp alot but the PvE stuff is some of the best out there right now. It takes some time to get to it all but it's worth the effort in my opinion.

fireworks, a screenshot contest, and adding an additional character slot

If this game gets any more generic, it won't have nearly as many subscribers as they thought it...oh, wait, nevermind.

Half the fun was exploring, there are some very epic locations in this game (although nothing really topped standing high on the ancient Archeronian temple in the Pict lands near Tortage, that was freaking phenomenal).

Fun game but unfortunately it just got a bit too "hey, haven't I played you before?"

Conan what is best in a MOG?

To crush the players hopes.
To drive them from the game.
To hear the lamentations of what could have been a good game.

Heh, I left AoC a while ago due to the "community" on bloodspire: young kids camping the respawn in the Eiglophian Mountains!

Some kind of gemmed weapon exploit meant that a guardian was skewering everything in sight

Open pvp was exciting at times, definately kept the pve fresh, when you don't know who's going to attack. Unfortunately it was abused at the time - the options I had:

a) change zones (not always possible due to there only being a single zone)
b) change respawn pads (not fun when you're trying to get some quests done)

ah well. How's AoC now?

I've actually been hearing a lot of good about AoC lately. I'm planning on getting back into it this weekend, possibly a bit sooner. It seems all the reason I left are no longer issues, and the game had one of the most impressive worlds and class systems I've seen. The combat was a blast too.

Damn, shouldn't have talked about it that much. Guess I'll reinstall tomorrow....

Grats Conan, lots of folks didn't think you'd make it a year. But a constantly improving game with some of the best systems in the genre and a fantastic community have helped keep it alive.
