P.U.R.E. & Demo Released

The P.U.R.E. Website now announces the release of the full version of this independently developed real-time strategy game, along with a playable P.U.R.E. demo. The game can be purchased from Impulse, and the demo is available on Mod DB, and mirrored on Gamer's Hell. P.U.R.E. was developed as a multiplatform game, but it's not clear if this release offers Linux or MacOS support.

Any web page that isn't designed to display in 1024x768 without left/right scrolling is an automatic failure.

Besides, it looks like a Total Annihilation clone.

Up until now P.U.R.E. was a free, GPL open-source game. It looks like it's still GPL open-source, but the "free" part for the game content has changed.

$30 seems a little steep for this, and it requires Impulse too. I know the developers have to eat, but that's a pretty radical change from free and cross-platform. Mac users and the Linux crowd certainly aren't going to like that especially since they can't play the new version of the game anymore since it requires Impulse.

It's a poor man's Supreme Commander, so calling it a Total Annihilation clone isn't too far from the mark I think. I have played it for a few hours, and besides its graphics, it's a real slick RTS. I personally think that 30 bucks for what was free a week ago is a tough sell, but it's the developer's choice. I'd be willing to part with 10 bucks for it myself.

Except Supreme Commander is $10 cheaper on Impulse ( http://www.impulsedriven.com/supcom ) .

$30 is too high for this, and tying it exclusively to Impulse is just plain stupid especially when it shuts out Macintosh and Linux users who could otherwise play your game.

Ah, well... the "poor man" aspect of it comes in to play when you consider that PURE won't make a low to mid-range CPU and GPU cry like SupCom does.

Actually, I have a several year old dual-core AMD, I think 2 gig cores, which is very "mid/lower-mid range" these days. I dumped 4 gigs of memory into it, and the only "high end" purchase was a 4870 video card.

Supreme Commander runs like glass now. I suspect that the video card was a moderate bottleneck, but the memory was the big one.

Tried the demo and I have to say, even as a fan of Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander, I was dissapointed. For $20? Not a chance, even to support an independent developer. Perhaps the demo is a way older version or something, as I can't imagine where they got the screenshots on Impulse. This isn't even as advanced as the last Spring release (a freeware TA 3D conversion) I tried. It does seem to use the Sping engine though, as "SPRING" is prominently displayed on start up.
