Out of the Blue

After a minor grease fire in the grill over the weekend (ever try grilling bacon? wow!), MrsBlue asked what we would have done if it had been a major fire, and my reply was that we have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. This inspired a quick inspection of the extinguisher, which turns out to have been way overdue, as it was in desperate need of a recharging. We picked up a pair of new extinguishers (we decided the one in my office was a bit small) in the meantime before figuring out where to recharge the old one, so we should be safe for now. I've made a vow to try and remember to check on these things regularly going forward, and thought sharing this story might help in case anyone else had lapsed in this area.

Thanks for the warning, Blue.

We have a couple in the house - one in the kitchen pantry and one in the garage. Both are mounted in the open so it is easy to check the charge.

Picked up the Panasonic BD60 Blu-Ray player yesterday and shoved in Iron Man - looks great! Frankly the load time is quicker than my old Sony upscaling DVD changer, so even that negative isn't. Haven't watched a whole movie yet (got in late last night), but I like what I see so far.

Just make sure if you ever have to use them to keep the dogs away from the chemical mess that results. For that matter, you probably don't want to breath it in either.

I do not know of any fire station that will. Private companies recharge them. (I have a friend in the business) If you have a fire extinguisher you purchased for your home, more than likely it is cheaper to replace it than to recharge it. (Any of the ones with plastic heads.)

What would you have done if it had been a major fire? How about just let it burn?

Several times a year I have a big BBQ for 30-40 people or so, and have 20 of those cheapo, greasy burgers on the grill at once. The grease from those sends flames shooting five feet high.

As long as you're not grilling underneath a hayloft, I'm not sure why that's a big deal? It'll burn itself out again.

super Slow motion HD footage (well it was HD on the TV on the time warp show) of what happens when you pour more than just a tiny 1 ounce of water into a grease fire. They also show what happens when you pour water into hot oil, it will start a BIG fire.

I still have an old Halon fire extinguisher that I keep handy in my "computer room". Halon is nasty for the environment (kills more ozone than CFC's, hence it's banning) but it's perfect for computer equipment in that there's no dry chemicals involved - - it's all gas.

The only down-side to dry chemical is that the powder they use is so fine it pretty much wrecks anything small and electric (not that fires do them any favors either). If I ever have to replace the Halon extinguisher, I'll try to find a CO2 type ......

Isn't Halon toxic to humans?

It is if you breathe it in a high enough concentration, but it was banned because it was highly damaging to the ozone layer (a little research showed it's a type of CFC: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halon_1211 )

I was just researching this when I came across a Halon alternative (interestingly called "Halotron" - - sounds like the latest Transformer).

Pricey, but at least it's available:

I always check the extingishers, smoke detectors and carbon detecor on daylight savings in the fall as you know you're going to be hibernating most of the winter so you really need that stuff up to spec moreso than the summer when you're out and about. And yes, check with your local fire department - they may inspect and/or recharge your extinguishers gratis.

What happens (I live in an apartment building) if some old guy falls asleep on his stove and the whole fucking thing burns down.

Implement Carousel ala Logan's Run in your building. No more old people! Of course a lot of us would be headed for Carousel pretty damn soon too, heheh.

From what I've been told the fire stations should have a list of contacts for charging extinguishers. If there is a non-emergency phone number for the fire dept then call that and ask.

Thanks for making me hungry Blue ><
