City of Heroes Going Rogue Details

NCsoft and Paragon Studios officially announce the City of Heroes Going Rogue expansion revealed earlier, filling in some of the details on the Bizarro-world alternate universe it will introduce to the super-powered MMORPG. Here's a bit:
In the Going Rogue expansion, hero and villain characters will become immersed in the new parallel universe known as Praetoria, which is governed by Tyrant™, the evil incarnation of the game’s main protagonist, Statesman™. As gamers search for Tyrant and the rest of his Praetorian guard, implacable foes and fierce resistance will arise to face them from all sides, causing heroes and villains alike to question their loyalties.

City of Heroes Going Rogue will introduce a new alignment system that helps players explore the shades of gray that lie between good and evil. For the first time, hero characters can become villains and vice versa, enabling hero archetypes to cross over to the Rogue Isles™ and villain archetypes to experience Paragon City™. Clearly marked missions, in addition to behaviors and decisions made by the player, will move a hero’s or villain’s moral compass, which could eventually change the hero’s or villain’s alignment. Going Rogue will also introduce two primary new fictional characters representative of this alignment shift in the game’s lore: Maelstrom, a pistol-wielding hero gone rogue, and Desdemona, a demon-summoning villain who has been redeemed.

I enjoyed COH soon after its release for about 6 months. PvE was hard and team combat was interesting. Then PvP was released and the character types were "balanced." Now _no one_ on the servers wanted a healer because all of the characters could heal in some way. Everyone became a blaster type. For me it just went downhill after PvP was introduced. I dont think I'm the kind of gamer that enjoys MMO's anyway.....too much repitition and annoying chat.

How can you compare Champs missions vs CoX's ones?

'Go into building X, kill Y people, click Z glowie, and escort John Doe out of the building' over and over and over on the same tilesets over and over again a good thing?

As for the briefcase, the downtown area was attacked by aliens, the mayor's office with emergency broadcast codes to hopefully signal someone outside the force bubble the aliens put up is a bad thing? It fits the enviroment, the mayor is in a make shift tent/station and there are wounded all over the place. Your player arrived on the scene and your suppose to help out, as a starting quest to familiarize yourself with the game quest system I thought it was fine.
So far every 'go kill something' quest/mission so far that I have encountered has been because they drop something that fits with the mission, ie: Aliens ambushed incoming Ambulances and took the medical supplies, go bring back 10 medical supply's. Again I don't see how it's a bad thing, it's all within the context/ambiance of the starting area.

I'm not a hater of CoX, I just hate that things like Going Rogue, are FINALLY being done. As for Statesmen, I agree with your statement about 'this is how I want you to play the game' when doing the Task Forces/Hami Raid's etc, but he was always about 'Risk vs Reward'. And he wouldn't have allowed all the PI farming, that is the mainstay of CoH. And Issue 14 made farming from 1 to 50 stupid easy. Ya just make a toon and travel 3 blocks to the Farm Bulding and away you go.
They might as well offer their own powerleveling services to the game.

With the exception of the UI, Champs Online far surpasses anything CoH did in it's 5 year run.

I completely disagree. I enjoy ChO a lot, but it certainly doesn't come close to CoX in many respects (the UI being only one of them.)

I'm sorry but 'fetch the mayor's briefcase' and 'go defeat 10 of mob x' are simply not heroic in nature.

Don't get me wrong, I've been enjoying the beta quite a lot, but they have a LOT of work ahead of them if they want to catch up to CoX in anything but button mashing and more travel power choices.

Yes, CoX is dated. But it's better then 'WoW with superpowers instead of magic and even worse character advancement' ala ChO. Again, I think ChO is going to be a solid MMOG, but I wouldn't throw away your CoX account just yet.

I won't speak for Half_Elf, though I'm sure he'll disagree with me. He's an old CoX hater who makes an appearance to bash and scream about the game every time it's a topic here.

Though I will agree with him that CoX PvP is pretty bad. The game's advancement systems are simply to customizable and flexible to balance easily at all. The devs have all but given up trying to do so as the majority of the games player base just end up bitching when something gets nerfed for the sake of PvP. Something Statesman did all the time. (He got some kind of backwards idea that the game should play as he saw fit, not as the players did. Long live Dev Lead Posi!)

As for PVP in City of Heroes it's more or less a mess. Instead of keeping up on balancing classes/builds/IO set bonuses they more or less let it go apeshit then come back with huge sweeping changes trying to more casual. Problem with that is you have people who have IO sets out the wazoo who are more or less mage/tanks that really shouldn't be.

Personally I've love to see them have a dedicated team to balancing the gameplay (pve and pvp), and adding some interesting pvp content like Warsong Gultch type CTF from WoW.

As to the UI, personally I would like a full set of slots ala most MMO's (WoW) where ya have 1-10 plus - and + keys instead of limiting it to 7 at the moment.

As with the issue with Microsoft and Marvel, it's been mentioned that Marvel wanted to go very casual (which it announced with it's casual MMO by another company) and Microsoft WAS going to do True Fantasy Live for Xbox but that was canned and never heard from again. Personally I don't think Microsoft wants to get into another Asheron's Call (and the space MMO they use to have) situation.

I tried the City of Heroes trial recently. The character creation was excellent, and the gameplay would’ve been good back when AO and EQ were the main competition, but it’s just too dated now and the server was embarrassingly empty.

It’s sad that interesting titles like this and AO are allowed to wither and die while desperate developers churn out hundreds of WoW clones.

How is PVP in City of Heroes?

Sadly, practically non-existant. It has the potential, and the few PvP fights I've gotten into (literally chasing a villain around a PvP zone, dodging in between buildings, firing when I got a shot, etc) have been fun, but there are some major balance issues.

How is PVP in City of Heroes? I played the beta for CoV and played CoH at launch but it got boring really fast.

Are there mini games that let you advance like Warhammer? Bases to raid that players built? How is the overall experience?

All I remember is endless mob fights. The missions all started blending together and if that is still the major focus of the game I'm not interested.

A little late huh? CO is going to slaughter all of the MMOs of this genre.

From what I hear from beta testers, CO is nothing to write home about and the interface is a step backwards. It also didn't bode well that Marvel/Microsoft dropped out of it due to "quality" reasons...

What's going to keep CoX afloat is the massive amount of content already present along with player made missions.

I doubt that CO is going to have much more content at launch than CoH did at launch. It will apparently play fairly differently from CoX, so there will be people interested in both games.

I'm hopeful for Champions Online, the gameplay is enjoyable. But most the quests aren't 'heroic' what so ever and the post-creation advancement system is pretty sub-par at the moment and doesn't offer a 10th of the advancement systems of CoX.

Knowing me, I'll end up playing both.

How the hell do they think they can trademark such common words such as statesman and tyrant?

Bring on DCUO and whatever Marvel is doing. Champs is going to suck too.

WHY THE FUCK DIDN'T THEY DO THIS 3 ISSUES AGO?!? People have been BEGGING to do this for years...

Still after Champs Beta.. I honestly do not see what CoH/CoV could add to the game to bring players back once Champs goes live. Unless Going Rogue offers substantial gameplay beyond 'hey you now start in the Rogue Isles instead of Atlas Park' I don't see anything over good coming from this.
