Thief 4 Announced

Eidos-Montréal offers the expected announcement of Thief 4, though they are not supplying many details about the next installment in the action/stealth series. The Thief 4 Website is online, but that seems to be shooting blanks right now. Here's what they have to say right now, which emphasizes their hunt for talent to fill out the game's development team:
Eidos-Montréal is excited to unveil its previously secret second title in development at the studio, Thief™ 4, the next instalment in the legendary series.

The original Thief game, Thief: The Dark Project redefined first person gaming and established an entirely new genre of stealth based game play. The critically and commercially acclaimed Thief series has won numerous awards and accolades including GameSpy Hall of Fame, GameSpot Greatest Games of All Time and The Academy of Interactive Arts And Sciences Outstanding Achievement in Character and Story Development.

Eidos-Montréal, which is also currently producing the much anticipated Deus Ex™ 3, has recruited the very best core team for the development of Thief 4. The team is comprised of industry veterans who have worked on an incredible collection of AAA titles and who each bring personal expertise in their respective fields.

“We’re in the early development stages for Thief 4, but this is an incredibly ambitious and exciting project for Eidos,” said Stéphane D’Astous, General Manager at Eidos-Montréal. “While it’s too early for us to offer any specific game details, right now we are focused on recruiting the very best talent to join the core team at the studio and help us make what we believe will be one of the most exciting games on the market.”

Development is under way and the team is looking to recruit the very best talent as production ramps up. If you are a world-class developer looking to join the talented Thief 4 team, visit www.eidosmontreal.com to submit your résumé or www.thief4.com to join the community discussion.

Thief 3 was okay, but it suffered greatly due to the compromises made for the consoles.

I still think those "compromises" were made in general to make the series more accessible, regardless the release. Aside from the interface, there wasn't really much in a PC-centric release that wouldn't have translated to the console versions.

I hope they reboot the franchise and go with a modern setting.

Why not make another Splinter Cell...? Sorry, I couldn't resist. Seriously, that was the bulk of the charm of the series - steampunk and magic settings, mixed in with turn-of-the-century style cities.

Yes it is cool to hate Thief 3 but The Cradle was such an amazing level any such arguments possess a very selective memory it seems. Oh and lol at the guy wanting a reboot to modern times, seriously, that is a terrible idea. You'd be gutting the Thief heritage and all that was awesomeand leaving an empty brand name in its stead. Seriously, no.

Well I'm excited about it. To those who said Thief 3 sucked - it had its problems with loading screens but 'Shalebridge Cradle' has to be one of the tensest, scariest and well crafted levels I've ever played. All the rough bits were worth it for that.

They're just jumping on the Driv3r bandwagon, but at least Driv3r got it right.

Since when was an "e" a "4" ? Isn't 4 an "h" (and an "e" is "3").

So this should really be called "T4ief" ... which looks dumb I must admit, but so does "Thi4f"! Gah!

And FUCK YEAH! Bring on that new Hitman game! Thanks for heads-up nin.

Now, what would make my day is if they announce System Shock 3.

They don't really have any excuses this time, the consoles are all powerful enough to do fairly open world games, albeit at lower resolutions than the PC. So if this is a mishmash of loading screens then it's totally on their heads.

... are a must. Thief 1 and 2 both boasted enormous levels in places, and they really added to the game. Thief 3 was okay, but it suffered greatly due to the compromises made for the consoles.

And they need to bring back rope arrows.

Wasn't this the same Dev house that said something along the lines of "We don't understand why people liked Deus Ex 1, it was too slow", and then a few weeks later said "This game is totally going to be a spiritual successor to Deus Ex 1"?

Actually, I'm pretty sure what the guy said was something in the veins of "The original Deus Ex was a slow game."

Which is a simple statement of fact. Deus Ex IS a slow game. The issue at hand, of course, is whether that made Deus Ex a bad game, and it didn't. In fact, Deus Ex is a fucking landmark in gaming history.

So if they are going to change the pace just because they felt that Deus Ex being slow made it a worse game, then yeah, that's a stupid decision.

If they up the speed because they think Deus Ex was freaking awesome, but they wouldn't mind it going a bit faster, I can kind of get behind that decision too.

It's all in the context, and I don't think anyone really knows what context the dev was referring to when he made that comment.

Yes!

that is pretty awesome actually..
The original thief games are CLASSICS. They ushered in the whole sneak around and kill stuff.

Here's hoping for a cool thief game.
Edit.. Remember the religious zealots that seemed to worship the hammer and was all about killing the heretics? I hope to have a chance to kill more of those guys in the new game.

If they can't preserve the gameplay between one game and the next keeping the setting the same, what makes you think that starting over from scratch is going to suddenly bring back the gameplay?

I don't really agree with that assessment so I have no comment for you. T3 was a let down in level design, not gameplay for me.

If they manage to preserve the classic Thief gameplay then I don't see a problem with it.

T3 just sucked. Looked pretty at the time, but just sucked.

I enjoyed some of it, I don't think it "sucked" or something. It wasn't as good as the second game for sure but it wasn't terrible or something. The main problem was that the devs had to fit each level into a very limited amount of memory space due to the original Xbox's spec limitations. Constant loading was too obnoxious and the level design suffered as a result. Nowadays the consoles are much more capable so even if they churn out a standard port it will at least be free of that crap.

Why not just give it another name and make it a new IP at that point?

/shrug, it's a well known brand name. If they manage to preserve the classic Thief gameplay then I don't see a problem with it.
