No SecuROM in Dragon Age: Origins

BioWare's Dragon Age Forums outline plans for copy protection in Dragon Age: Origins, revealing the upcoming RPG will not use the reviled SecuROM system:
I have some good news to pass on to you today that answers one of the most frequently asked Dragon Age: Origins PC questions.

We’re happy to announce that the boxed/retail PC version of Dragon Age: Origins will use only a basic disk check and it will not require online authentication. In other words, the retail PC version of the game won’t require you to go online to authenticate the game for offline play. We have chosen not to use SecuROM in any version of Dragon Age that is distributed by EA or BioWare.

Some other cool stuff that we hope you’ll like - we have already launched the Dragon Age toolset beta, which offers developer-grade tools, and we’re looking forward to what fans will create with it. We’ll also be supporting the game with a ton of great downloadable content that will be available for purchase after the game’s release. Together these features will provide some very cool reasons to go online with Dragon Age: Origins.

We’re really excited as we head towards the release of Dragon Age: Origins this fall on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, so keep an eye out for more news as we’ll be providing you with more details shortly.

Stay tuned for more coolness to come… =]

Not only are half the things you post as factual (like Activision's controling interest in the Vivendi merger that isn't correct) wrong

Learn to read, dimwit. I don't think I ever said "controlling interest". I think I said "dominant partner" and I got that from here (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=16458) which is one of the most reputable resources for the business side of the video gaming world. I fully well know that Vivendi has the majority in stocks (52% if I recall correctly). Activision is still regarded as the dominant partner, however, since they got to appoint the CEO of the merged company.

For the record that makes CJ 2 - You 0

What is this the 50's witchhunt? George Orwell's 1984? Get some education or drop the clueless innuendo, how the hell do you pull something like that out of your ass and ever expect to be taken seriously again???

Dude, with a sig like mine I don't think I'm exactly in the business of being taken seriously in general . Besides I just thought that this other dude was a bit clueless about the business side of things. OK. Fine. "Anti-corporate commie cunt" mighta been a bit harsh but as a troll you gotta do what a troll gotta to do, ya know?

I was actually following the argument quite closely and agreeing mostly with Parker on this one, as RollinThunder presented no evidence to the contrary until Parker said this:

pot-smoking anti-corporate commie cunt liars

The only point you've proven is you're a complete and utter idiot. I refuse to do the leg work for an asshole. Not only are half the things you post as factual (like Activision's controling interest in the Vivendi merger that isn't correct) wrong, but you try to be as insulting as possible over the internet just to try and look "cool".

I got news for ya buddy not only are you not cool, but you aparently just make things up as you go along. Way to go tool.

CJ, there's an actual link to a JR conference call where he says its partly due to adding to their quarterly financials.

Again... where? Link? If you google for Dragon Age's delay and JR the only thing that comes up is a conference call with investors where JR stated exactly what Derek "Crush" French from BW posted earlier in this thread (check here: http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/57070 ).

Why anyone would bother to make something like that up is just silly.

Well, there's a lot of silly and retarded people in the world and wherever you got your info from there's plenty of both.

I realize your whole meaning in life is to troll Blue's, though you should know what you're talking about while trolling, other wise you just come off as a moron.

Unlike you I have been able to prove my point with a link to what JR actually said while you insist on him saying something completely retarded that he most certainly never ever said to anyone. Anyone with half a brain and the slightest bit of an idea of how businesses work and operate would know that what you claim he said is beyond retarded.

Having read a little of your posting history I'm actually convinced you're an idiot anyway

Why? Because I keep exposing dumbass pot-smoking anti-corporate commie cunt liars like yourself who make up stuff that suits their agenda time and again? Fine. If that makes me an idiot I'm pretty damned proud of it, son. In this case at least I'm an idiot with a clue and with proof that your claims are all made up BS.

Derek, I believe you... the initial reason for the delay was quality... the game needed a couple months more polish...
but then EA decided it would be best to go with a simultaneous release to lessen the impact an earlier PC release (and piracy) would have on the console sales... plus save the money of running two separate ad campaigns.

Still I don't get the statement about waste of time and money for two different releases. Since it was a PC only title (at one point) that had to be part of the plan when the console development teams started their work. They knew they weren't going to be able to catch up and have a simultaneous release.

So if I take all that into account, the posts from your official forums, and the fact that EA is now pulling the strings it's not hard to read between the lines. Don't take it the wrong way. It's just easier to say "delayed for the consoles" then to explain all the reasons that snowballed into the PC delay.

Either way I wish you the best. I love the early games and even liked Mass Effect to a lesser degree while playing. Also I hope Dragon Age Origins is all that it's been hyped up to be, and more. It looks good. I just won't buy it at release.

Yes yes, Steam please!

Client-managers like Steam and Impulse might as well be DRM (nevermind the fact that Steam has a form of internal DRM*). I would simply prefer to have the actual installer files, or the disc. Which is probably why BioWare noted boxed/retail PC version of Dragon Age. They, through EA, have control over what goes into the published, physical product.

*Valve President Gabe Newell also stated "most DRM strategies are just dumb" because they only decrease the value of a game in the consumer's eyes. Newell's suggests pairing DRM with "[creating] greater value for customers through service value", and stopped short of repudiating Valve's DRM system, known as Steam. However, Mr. Newell's anti-DRM rhetoric flies in the face of Steam's own copy-protection strategy, which is actually a form of DRM.

It is NOT SecuROM. Not sure how we can be any more clear on that. Here is what Chris said: "We have chosen not to use SecuROM in any version of Dragon Age"

Awesome thanks for the clarification, hopefully this silences the naysayers from spreading FUD.

Yes yes, Steam please!

This game was pretty much a must buy for me anyway (BG's spiritual successor? NWN style toolset for infinite content? SIGN ME UP!)

The lack of SecureRom is a total boon and assures a lot of folks who pirate simply as a form of strike will instead buy the game (if they want to play it of course.) I'm sure it won't stop piracy of the game, but it will assure a lot more people buy it than otherwise.

Now if we could only hear word if this will hit Steam at release or not. I buy 95% of my games through Steam and have actually passed up on games simply because they weren't on Steam. So in this case, a Steam release would simply be icing on the cake.

Hey Crush will this game be on Steam upon release?

We haven't announced our digital distro options at this time. Stuff is still in progress and hopefully we will have more news in a month or so.

I'd like to place another vote for a Steam install, please, Derek. Thank you!

Feel free to search thru this thread as its linked in there, I'm not about to go through some 100 pages to find it for you.

Ah OK. So you're saying that the EA boss has posted on the DA forums to say that they delayed the game for higher quarterly earnings in Q4/2009? Now that's very likely. Not.
Or are you saying that some other random anti-corporate dumbass like yourself has posted to the thread making up bullshit about what the EA boss never said? Aaaahhh. B-I-N-G-O.

Their other reason was to save money and market both the PC and 360 versions at the same time.

Yes, Sir. That was the main reason according to BioWare's Derek French who posted this info in this very thread. No need to play the parrot here. We can read, y'know.

Not a shock to see you spreading bullshit FUD either. In your version of the universe I suppose all devs and publishers should accomodate people with 6 year old videocards too.

SecuRom has a completely self contained executable version, all Bioware has to do is elect to use it. The game isn't out yet so no one knows what they will use, all they have said is that there will be no activations.

IF EA chooses just to use a simple cd check, than there are no problems at all. IF they choose only to drop the online activation, but still use the copy protection features from Securom, there WILL be problems, because then the game have to install a driver to ensure that this copy protection will work.

We're well past the days of dvd drive problems with game protection fortunately with the exception of the dinosaurs who refuse to upgrade their ancient drives
