TF2 MMO Code

The Steam Users' Forums highlight some latent MMO code found in the latest Team Fortress 2 patch (thanks Shacknews), indicating Valve has some further plans for persistence in the teamplay shooter, or, more likely, they are messing with us after other code discoveries inspired MMO TF2 jokes. Here's the code snippet:

L4D is fine, it's a quick blast designed for LANs when you need something to have a laugh with. I honestly don't understand why people play it online given that it's quite a teamwork oriented shooter, but that's my problem. I don't like versus mode either, seems boring.

The survivor pack...now that's actually moving the game towards what it should have been at release, and now we need the SDK. Once that's out we'll (hopefully) see a surge in new mods, maps and such.

True and a lot of them are really fun. But for example, some of them aren't as polished performance wise (like that one recent map included in the scout patch, egypt or some such in TF2, VERY slow performing map when its full of players when I can play on almost any other map 60-100 FPS). Valve takes enourmous amounts of time optimizing maps performance wise (you can listen to some of the things they do to save memory and textures in the directors comments in TF2 and L4D). I really wish valve would have polished over that egypt map they released first (I think thats the name)

Anyway I'm expecting most fan made campaigns to be more like death toll or dead air, instead of no mercy.
I consider no mercy to be much more polished than the recently added 2. Like there are places in Dead Air you can drag ppl with smoker that garuntees death (they hang over mid air and you can't save them).

Likely the campaigns will come with the release of the SDK (i.e. fan made).
I wouldn't be at all surprised if we mostly see just short survival releases from valve from now on. Keep in mind that with the release of the DLC they only gave a single new "map", the last stand lighthouse one. All the versus stuff was already in the game (it just got some tweaks), all the other 15 or 16 maps for survival are just pieces of already done maps with the rest of the levels blocked off.

In TF2, they typically release a map or two with the big patches, but in L4D, to do an entire campaign would take a lot more work than just a map in survivor or a map in TF2. So, my guess is maybe 1 more campaign over the entire life of L4D, and the rest is little survivor map updates, and maybe another game mode if they can come up with one. I think we'll just have to rely on fan made stuff when the SDK hits.

Don't get me wrong, I love L4D (except the crappy matchmaking which has only now improved 5 months later) and I love TF2 (but now I'm wondering what they are going to do to it).
But I just have realistic expectations based on past valve updates.

Ya there's been a lot of l4d hate lately on blues (big surprise for ANY game i know) ...

but i would indeed like to see a new campaign or two... even the hint of one or two would be nice.

Solid game though. it'll come eventually... right ?

Expectations are often unrealistic and simply wrong. People just like to take things for granted I guess. I'm confident L4D will get a good amount of new content but I don't expect it to be done already. People do still have to make it.

What's with all the valve hate here? Left 4 dead sucks? That is news to me.

It's not about hating Valve or even disliking them. It's just that after the high bar set with Team Fortress 2 that Left 4 Dead isn't really being taken as seriously, which is disappointing being Valve's first new IP and full priced release since the original Half-Life. The support is far above the industry norm but people were expecting more. The Survivor update really didn't do it for me.

That's EXACTLY it.

Having just gotten this game Thursday and already putting 18.7 hours into it (big whup, wanna fight about it?) I can safely say I'm disappointed there aren't any new campaigns. Where's the SDK?

My initial argument against purchasing L4D still stands (at full price, anyways)... game needs more content. Not this BS survivor shit but more unique campaigns. The obvious environs like a school, prison or mall still stand, but campaigns on a cruise ship or something *really* fresh like that would be great.

Or they could add four new characters and campaigns outside of America...

Whatever, the bottom line is that the game is sound as is and just needs more content. Wouldn't hurt to add some more to the arsenal, either.
