S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat

GSC Game World officially announces S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat (working title), which turns out to be a new project in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, due for release this autumn, rather than an add-on, as was speculated when the project was first discovered. The announcement is accompanied by two screenshots, and here's the deal:
GSC Game World is glad to announce a new project in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series – S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat (working title) for PC.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat will become a third stand-alone game in the highly-acclaimed Survival FPS S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series.
The project is slanted for release in autumn 2009.

The events of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat unfold shortly after the end of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. Having discovered about the open path to the Zone center, the government decides to hold a large-scale military "Fairway" operation aimed to take the CNPP under control.

According to the operation's plan, the first military group is to conduct an air scouting of the territory to map out the detailed layouts of anomalous fields location. Thereafter, making use of the maps, the main military forces are to be dispatched.

Despite thorough preparations, the operation fails. Most of the avant-garde helicopters crash. In order to collect information on reasons behind the operation failure, Ukraine's Security Service send their agent into the Zone center. From now on everything depends on the player.

Key game features:
        • Photorealistic exclusion Zone – Pripyat town, Yanov railway station, Jupiter factory, Kopachi village and more, recreated by their true-to-life prototypes.
        • New story, a number of unique characters.
        • Extended system of side quests.
        • New monsters: Chimera and Burer. New behaviour and abilities for all monsters.
        • New A-Life system, created using the players' best-liked elements of the first two games in series.
        • Emissions considerably influence the world of the Zone.
        • Sleep function added into the game.
        • New player's interface.
        • Possibility to continue the game after completion in a freeplay mode.
        • The game is developed on X-Ray engine v.1.6

I'll admit that I haven't played either game (mostly because the idea of -partial- open world plus no skills that you can improve just sounds boring to me personally),

The games are, at the very least, unique. There's nothing else like them IMHO. If you're a FPS fan I think they'd be worth picking up if you find a deal on em. Not sure what I would compare them to. And you can get weapons/armor/ammo upgrades, decide what you want to do most of the time. Felt open ended to me.. And the atmosphere is well done, feels like you're "going to the Zone".

you mean like id, epic, squaresoft, nintendo, etc. etc. etc.?

They have their own character. They also did a lot to the engine. However, that's essentially their strategy and they're probably going to find it harder to justify this as a full priced game, especially after the rocky launch of Clear Sky. Still, they are great games - you just have to give them a bit of patience.

Wow! It's like a real-life version of Fallout 3 without the super-mutants!

You just need to look a bit harder... they have invisibility.

Surprised

Yes, yes they are, if Clear Sky is any indication of what Pripyat is to be. Clear Sky is more of a mod than anything else.

Is Pripyat the Russian equivalent of Cthulhu?

Not exactly.. Pripyat was the city built to house the workers and families of workers of the Chernobyl nuclear site. It's been a mostly utterly abandoned landscape ever since the evacuation three days after the Chernobyl incident. This is why it shows up in games all over the place. It's CREEPY AS ALL HELL.

Look it up on Wiki, and dig out pictures of the place on the web. It's pretty amazing to look at.

Amazing, it took them 10+ years to come out with the first game, which was underwhelming at best (although it beat the living shit out of our video hardware until Crysis came along), and in the 3 years since, they'll have released at least 2 full games on top.

Was Clear Sky even worth it? I heard it was plagued with bugs and not very fun...
Surprisingly I came across very few. Early on there was a game breaking bug (in 1.5.0.4, the Steam release version) but a config file fixed it and the issue was later patched. Other than that I hugely enjoyed the game and very much recommend it. From my perspective I certainly don't see how it was "horribly buggy", though accept that other people's experiences may differ. It doesn't have the spooky atmosphere of the original but the large scale battles and factions mean the combat gives it a completely different angle. It was definitely released too early and was rightly criticised - performance at launch left a lot to be desired - but it's an important game in the FPS landscape.

I'm soooo happy! I will enjoy the summer (while you guys work on the title) then automn and cold will kick in, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. CoP will kick in. How awesome. I'm glad you're keeping X-Ray and update it.

Oh, will North America have access to a Collector Edition box this time?

Clear Sky was horribly buggy, so much so it had game stopping critical bugs that destroyed any chance of continuing on with the game. I played it 3 times and I believe it was when patch 1.5.8 was out where I was able to get through it all. That was like 3-4 patches in.

When this game comes out i will definitely pirate it until they fix it. They deserve this because just like Gothic 3, you lost our trust. Don't release it in an Alpha state. Bugs are understandable but usually performance related, not "This mission fails to load!" crap.

Gloria in excelsis GSC.

And yes, the atmosphere in STALKER really is top notch. It's like I'm really in a russian wasteland; I am so glad they left all non-storyline voices in russian.

stalker is turning into a favored series of mine. id like to think it will be considered a classic in time
Indeed. It doesn't have the polish, pacing or acting quality of Half-Life 2 but it has bucket loads of atmosphere, not to mention Clear Sky has probably the best AI I've seen. One of the things that really impressed me with CS was the dynamic weather - it would change ever so gradually and then suddenly you'd find yourself in a thunderstorm with lightning surging through the sky and rain washing down surfaces. Just brilliant.
