GameFly vs. USPS

Ars Technica reports that game rental service GameFly has filed a complaint against the US Postal Service over game discs that are lost and damaged in the mail. GameFly contends that discs are broken by the mail sorting equipment, a problem that persisted after they started using a protective insert that doubled its shipping costs. They say between one and two percent of the games they ship are damaged, but that preferential treatment of similar mailings by Netflix and Blockbuster prevents them form suffering similarly (though no breakage figures for either of them are provided).

Gamefly is a really mixed bag. If you're close to a few of their distro centers you get great turnaround times. If you're not it's horrendous, there's a lot of bitching online about them. I can't really see the USPS giving one company preferential treatment over another, AFAIK there are no contracts between Netflix or Blockbuster with the USPS.

after getting a few broken disks and then one missing disk, I quit gamefly for good. The worst part was trying to get an email back from Gamefly's customer service about the missing disk. I wasnt impressed with gamefly at all.

I've dealt with them all for decades and worked for the USPS at one time. They all suck to varying degrees. And yes, they all handle packages as if they couldn't care less. That's why you package it well and/or get the insurance. Bulk mailing is cheap and gets no preferential treatment.

Hell, one percent? WTF are they complaining about? Oh, and GameFly sucks, anyway!

I will admit that USPS's tracking information is worse than useless. I'd say it goes Fedex, UPS, and then USPS a distant third in that regard.

@Verno - I don't watch FoxNews. I don't watch television and haven't since November 2008. I also don't visit foxnews.com, cnn.com, headlinenews.com, abcnews, or any other similar sites. I can assure you there are no FoxNews stickers covering my eyes.

Weird. I never had any problems with DHL, FedEx, or UPS. USPS is the only carrier I've had problems with. I used to run a side business on eBay and basically gave up because of delivery problems with USPS.

The last time I had problems with USPS was an Amazon order. They added "delivered" to the tracker information on a Friday, only I hadn't received. On the following Monday I waited until about noon and they still hadn't delivered. I called Amazon and told them that USPS is claiming they delivered it, according to the tracker, but I never received it. They promptly send out another product, and even upgraded the shipping to FedEx at no cost. Needless to say I received the item a day later.

You get what you pay for. If you want government-run services then that's the caliber of product and services you will receive. This has nothing to do with political ideology. It has to do with the way government operates its affairs and how their shitty services effect people and businesses.

Yeah like the financial sector or the auto industry! Who needs government oversight or aid? Capitalism gogo! The FoxNews stickers covering your eyes need to be removed.

DHL is about to go bye-bye, btw.. we used them where i work too

we used to get our applecare parts shipped from them, and its like DHL had some sort of "acceptable ineptitude" level.. because packages were constantly being lost or delayed or sent to the wrong place - it was a fairly mind boggling amount of lameness

finally apple switched back to UPS for shipping warranty parts, shit got back in line instantly

I'm not sure what you guys are all doing to get such crappy USPS feelings. I've had one single package damaged by the USPS. I shipped my PC from Ohio to Hawaii and at some point the hard corner of something punctured the box and dented my case slightly. That's the only thing that's ever come out even bruised. With UPS and Fedex I've never had packaged materials damaged, but the boxes invariably arrive beat right to hell and back.

DHL... Man. When they were Airborne Express they were just about the shittiest courier you can imagine. We used them where I worked work. On average I'd say they lost about a fifth of our packages.

I work as an engineer for the company that manufactures the majority of the mail sorters used by USPS and all I can say is that Gamefly must be using some pretty crappy packaging for their disks to be damaged by the equipment.
Also, it's all the same equipment that the Netflix, Blockbuster and everyone else's packages go through, do Gamefly seriously believe that USPS has various grades of large and very expensive mail sorters sitting around so that they can allocate varying levels of service quality?

People don't seem to have read the actual article. The main points are:

#1. They tried paying for more protective packaging and it didn't help.
#2. Netflix and Blockbuster using the same service are receiving preferential sorting, and Gamefly has not been able to get the same deal from the USPS.

It doesn't have anything to do with how shitty USPS is or isn't. Besides which, Fedex and UPS aren't any better, and DHL is clearly shittier than all other services.

@space captain

socialism? Please don't put words into my mouth. I'm not going to walk down this path with you.

im not putting words in your mouth, im trying to ascertain what form of political environment in which you live where "the government does NOT run things"

you were the one that brought it up, why shy away from clarification unless you have no point to begin with?

or are you talking exclusively about parcel services?? perhaps it would be better proposed as "thats what happens when you let the government run your parcel service" rather than the much more nebulous "things" you indicated

that way less people would assume you refer to the Republic of Strawberry Fields

@Verno

FedEx, UPS, and DHL deliver packages in excellent condition. I've personally never experienced loss or damage on any products from these carriers.

@space captain

socialism? Please don't put words into my mouth. I'm not going to walk down this path with you.

as opposed to what, exactly? Private sector carriers such as FedEx, UPS, and DHL.

@Ecthelion

How do other countries do it? Do any of them have non-governmental postal services? No clue, but I would venture a guess and say most probably use private sector carriers such as FedEx, UPS, and DHL.

You get what you pay for. If you want government-run services then that's the caliber of product and services you will receive. This has nothing to do with political ideology. It has to do with the way government operates its affairs and how their shitty services effect people and businesses.

But I think this is all irrelevant. It shows that Gamefly is losing money. Netflix uses the USPS and their mailer sleeves are horrid. Basically a sheet of paper glued together with a return address. I think the reason NetFlix isn't bitching about the USPS is that any losses they suffer is far less than the number of customers they have.
