Left 4 Dead Survival Pack Details

The Left 4 Dead Blog has a lengthy post outlining details for the upcoming survival pack for Left 4 Dead, Valve's multiplayer shooter. The article includes more insights into the extensive research Valve uses to help with game design (though only one graph this time for you PowerPoint fans), describing how they determined the way difficulty will ramp up over time in survival mode.

Can I just have the SDK instead?

Myself, I'm an amateur mapmaker at best, but I can't wait until the guys who made Dead City and Death Aboard maps get a hold of the SDK and churn out campaigns that rival the Valve ones.

Check out the maps from Diputs and ilcannibal, downloadable from fileplanet. If these guys can make maps this good just by tooling around with the code, I can't wait to see what they can do with an official SDK.

I'm not too terribly excited about this update; I don't care for versus mode too much and Survival mode doesn't sound all that earth-shattering. Maybe it will grab me once I play it...

Didn't they say the SDK is coming very shortly after this update? I'm pretty sure they did.

Same here. I didn't think there was enough content in the original L4D release and I don't like the idea of having to pay for more of what should have already been there. I'll probably pass on this.s{

I'm really looking forward to survival mode as I often find it hard to find the time to play a full campaign. I'm also looking forward to the kids going back to school next week after the Easter holidays, every game of L4D that I have tried to play this week has been full of whining kids (even more so than usual).

Well excuse me fanbois. I clicked the link and saw "Purchase on steam" and didn't click it to see it was actually talking about L4D itself. And this overhyped thing is still $49.99? Whatever. I guess they agreed with me that L4D needed to be shipped with alot more content, which as usual from Valve comes months after I'm sick of even looking at the game.s{

Valve provides a pretty massive amount of post-release content for all of their titles. If that doesn't satisfy you then I have no idea what game will but surely you will not find it on this planet.

I see similar comment come up frequently from people who don't have the game - I myself was thinking similar things before I bought it.

A campaign averages say an hour with 4 campaigns, so that'd be a very short 4 hours if this was a singleplayer game. On the other hand, each 4 campaigns is 5 sections which equate to roughly a multiplayer map each, so it's a MP game with 20 maps.

Being co-op it comes somewhere in the middle. But then there's the variation which comes from both "Director" and teammates. Alone, these probably wouldn't make much difference but together it's substantial - it's like for each map there's a physical layout and certain rules, but each time you play it's like different guy made it. Well, that's probably overstating it, but every time there is a new experience to be had.

At full price I stayed away then pounced on the half price weekend and for me the full price would have been a bargain. Yes, imo this DLC simply fixes vs mode for 2 campaigns and adds a minor feature that a mod could have done pretty easily - what I'm really looking for in DLC is a new campaign.

But if there was no more DLC ever, it'd still be one of the most enjoyable games I've ever played, and it's still be one of the games I'd got the most hours out of.

Buying the game because of the hype and not buying the game because of the hype are mere flipsides of the same coin. The only way to defeat hype is to simply ignore the hype.
