Will Wright & EA Partner Up

GameDaily reports that Will Wright is parting ways with Electronic Arts, and the designer of The Sims and Spore will now concentrate on running Stupid Fun Club. The association with EA is still there, however, as not coincidentally, this press release announces EA is making an equity investment to partner with Wright in the Stupid Fun Club. Word is:
EA and Will each own equal percentages of Stupid Fun Club and are the principal shareholders. In addition, EA has the right to develop game concepts that spring from Stupid Fun Club projects. Will Wright is represented by Creative Artists Agency.

"The entertainment industry is moving rapidly into an era of revolutionary change," said Will Wright. "Stupid Fun Club will explore new possibilities that are emerging from this sublime chaos and create new forms of entertainment on a variety of platforms. In my twelve years at EA, I've had the pleasure to work alongside some of the brightest and most talented game developers in the industry and I look forward to working with them again in the near future."

"We believe in Will's vision for Stupid Fun Club and we're looking forward to partnering with Will and his team long into the future," said John Riccitiello, EA's Chief Executive Officer. "Will is a great designer and he's been part of a great legacy of globally recognized game franchises like The Sims, SimCity and Spore. The teams that have been leading those franchises in recent years have a lot of exciting content coming."

Sims is as fun as a jar of Sea Monkeys, just barely. I remember talking to WW on usenet right after the first Sims. I said I would find it more interesting if it was more of a Sim Neighborhood. Where interactions between sims across the neighborhood were remembered and persistent. So when you make all these different households, there is a greater social dynamic occuring. I think Sims 3 is doing some of that. But even though it's DRM free, I really am not in to this stuff.

Didn't feel very game-like, just voyeuristic.

Don't judge me!

Oh... I mean, uh... you're right.

About an hour in I had the two neighbor females of my Sim in the hot tub making out with each other. Really, I'd seen all there was to the game at that point and uninstalled it soon thereafter.
LMAO, so true.

I never got the appeal of The Sims. Oh look, my guy is reading the paper. Oh look, he's taking a dump. Oh look, he's learned how to play pool.
Shouldn't I be doing these things?

It felt like it was Diner Dash with less micromanagement. Didn't feel very game-like, just voyeuristic.

And I think spore made crazy money despite people being pretty disappointed with it.

This videogame analyst believes that it will take five years and several expansion packs for Spore to break even, let alone make a profit.

Consider that Will Wright's Spore, which sold 1 million copies in its first 17 days, was supposed to be a big hit for Electronic Arts; but the development cost was so high that that internal estimates now say it will take five years—and a bunch of sequels and expansions—for the company to recoup its initial costs.

SimCity 2000 and The Sims are two of the greatest PC games ever made, IMHO. Too bad WW probably won't have a hand in developing SimCity 5, provided EA ever makes it...

Oh, the irony of that statement...

LOL. Hide it in plain site, they'll never see it!

I would like to think this is in response to the absurd DRM policies that EA put on Spore but I'm pretty sure Will's done making anything fun. It's profit profit profit. And I think spore made crazy money despite people being pretty disappointed with it.

Where is ... System Shock 3?

Where it should be, resting in peace. There is neither a game business climate nor a company that would make this game anything but a huge clusterfuck.

The irony is that Will hasn't made anything fun since SC2000?
I'm exaggerating, but only if he had a hand in 3000.

Also, that web site is terrible.

In other words, nothing's really changed and we'll keep fucking up Will's games, just as we always have!
