No Online DRM in Sim 3

The Sims 3 Website has word the controversial online features of the SecuROM digital rights management system will not be used for the upcoming release of The Sims 3, saying the lifestyle simulation sequel will instead use a serial key-based system with no online authentication. According to EA's humble Rod Humble: "We feel like this is a good, time-proven solution that makes it easy for you to play the game without DRM methods that feel overly invasive or leave you concerned about authorization server access in the distant future." Eurogamer asked if this was a trend for other future games and were told by an EA spokesperson: "We are just looking at this solution for The Sims 3 at the moment."

Well that makes no sense.

-Don't piss off the computer illiterate Wallmart / Costco game shoppers (for obvious reasons), but it's ok to piss off the regular computer savvy gamer that can spread viral negativity about a product very quickly.

Morons.

What doesn't make sense about that? They're trialing it on Sims 3 before other games?

Yeah I'm sure they're worried about what the 10,000 Internet shut-ins from 4chan say to others

DRM didn't hurt Spore sales despite low Amazon ratings so I will view this as goodwill instead of being a knob about a nice gesture.

Makes perfect sense. Look at the sales figures for sims games, that amount of people being happy in the casual game crowd easily outnumbers the buyers of other genres. Frankly, it's the casual gamer and not the computer savvy disgruntled gamer that are bringing in the numbers now.

Hah, you must be an utter retard or something. EA says "Ok no more DRM in this game" and saying "cool thanks, thats nice for a change" is somehow pro-EA. What exactly would anti-EA be in that situation? RARRR NO I WANT MORE DRM DAMN U EA LEAVE PC GAMERS ALONE.

Go sit in the corner for awhile.

Nice to see EA doing this for a change. But I have this feeling that the majority of Sims3 players won't be bothered too much by which DRM the game uses anyway.

Holy crap! This is great news from EA imo and I do hope this will be the rule for all their games and not only Sims 3. If so I will no longer boycott EA. I wonder what's next in store for us? Maybe we will see pigs that can fly to?! GO EA!

Obviously less DRM is better than more DRM, but NO DRM is best of all. But lets give them the benefit of the doubt shall we?

Anyway I wasnt ranting against EA as much as against you personally Verno, because in every thread about EA you show up as its shinning white knight. EA doesnt need a shining white knight (no Multi-billion dollar corporation does). EA's actions speak for themselves, any attempt to glorify them or raise them upon high is detestable fanboism and asskissing.

The Sims has perfect DRM anyway: No one who knows how to pirate software would play the shit.

I think you're thinking of someone else because I rarely give a crap what EA does as long as they don't charge me more money for games. I just don't see them as some big evil giant out to do me harm. They're just some random company like any other random company to me.

Also, your personal grievances aren't something anyone cares about, stop being so full of yourself there little guy

I could say all you do is be negative and generally crap on everything along with picking on other posters to make yourself feel better but hey, nobody's perfect right?

Don't you know Verno? Unless EA is your own personal Satan, and you think every game released after 2001 is consolized crap, you are not welcome here.

For the record, I think he's probably thinking of someone else too, because I certainly don't notice you being an EA fanboy. Hell I don't think I've EVER seen an EA fanboy here.

Dead Space was pretty awesome and I've enjoyed a lot of EA games over the past few years. They're dropping DRM finally, why stay away?

SimCity 5 or stfu, EA. I can't remember the last EA game I cared about, let alone purchased. I think it was SimCity 4 Deluxe in 2004 or 2005.

"Trialing?" Basic disc-check protection has been around for years. EA was using it long before they went with DRM. In addition, how exactly do you run a trial for copy-protection? All copy-protection is inevitably cracked and Securom DRM has been getting cracked for a while. If publishers actually expected results, they wouldn't keep using protection that doesn't work.

Back in the Trip Hawkins days, EA used to be a mark of quality. Given that they've spent the past year publicaly apologising (c.f. "We destroyed Bullfrog") and released a few new IPs, I think we should start giving them a little bit more credit again.

If they nuke SecuROM completely then I'll be a happy bunny.
