iPhone Wolf3D & DOOM "Fairly Soon"

id Software has released Wolfenstein-3D for the iPhone, offering a mobile version of their original World War II first-person shooter. The 10 MB download is available on id Software's FTP server, and here are the release notes, which includes info about the history of this release. There are further details in this included document on iPhone development written by John Carmack with extensive details, concluding saying: "I'm going back to Rage for a while, but I do expect Classic Doom to come fairly soon for the iPhone." Frans, who dug up this scoop, was inspired to momentarily come out of retirement and post a mirror on Gamers.org.

I'm just guessing, but most likely using the angle of the phone to move, and probably an on-screen button to fire. I hate playing games on the iPhone.
My thoughts exactly. The iPhone does have its moments, but it's not a good gaming platform. I'm getting kind of sick & tired of seeing all these ports done, with no significant attention paid to the fact that the device lacks the appropriate controls. Carmack's dissertation does mention the control issues, but then again he didn't solve them either. It's still a messy control scheme.

How do you play them without the controls?

If they did, it's for jailbroken phones only. I don't think there's one in the App Store as the user can't really provide their own data files.

Isn't Doom ported by some insane people for every device known to man?

Surely they did the iPhone years ago?

I can see me buying this when it hits the app store, provided it doesn't cost too much.

Can't wait to see Doom on it.
