id Software Interview

Gametrailers TV interviews Todd Hollenshead, talking with the id Software CEO about various things, including the just-launched QUAKE LIVE, as well as upcoming projects like Wolfenstein, DOOM, and Rage. Along the way he Todd confirms that Rage will not be released this year, though he does say they are nearing the point where more information is revealed about the game. He also says the new DOOM game may not be named DOOM 4, while also hinting the game may include vehicles. Also, there are some new Rage screenshots and images on Eurogamer.pt. Thanks VG247.

I loved both Q1 and Q2. Damn, those were the golden days?

Yeah, but I think the circus surrounding the qtest release and the popularity of the MP at the time was worth more than the game itself.

That experience is dead.

Rage looks like a game about shanty towns.

No, Hollenshead said it WOULD be released this year. Blue misheard or misinterpreted what he said.

"But we're probably looking at this for next year, right? Not this year?"
TH: "Uhhhh, no we'll be out this year."

Ya that's what I heard to. I played it over and over about 5 times to make sure I was hearing it right. I'm not the only one.

Well, here's hoping this year. Here's hoping it's a big hit for above average game-play... not just hype and the shiny graphics. I haven't really cared for their brand of game-play since Q2. I loved both Q1 and Q2. Damn, those were the golden days?

I too am playing more bargain bin, older, passed over games than anything fresh to hit the shelves. And nothing on the horizon has me excited.

I'm still pissed that I won't be able to play Dragon Age: Origins until they release the console versions.

Is it just me, or is Rage shaping up to look like Fallout 3: The Movie : The Game?

Well, it is id - adjust expectations accordingly.

Rage still looks like it will have a bit more detail than some recent titles, it is losing its initial amazement factor. Also, given that we are basically a year away, I do wonder how all the other PC/console games will evolve between now and then.

It would be neat if id pulls it off, but it is not like id has a track record for much of anything these days. In addition to that, after playing some recent shooters or even a wider genre of games, nothing in Rage seems particularly new or amazing to me. It is really just a collection of things I have seen already and, again, it is not like I am expecting id to make the "perfect" amalgamation of all these games.

Then again, I guess I should not dump entirely on id. Looking at all platforms, but with a particular focus on the PC side of things, no games are really exciting me. I still log in and play more WoW than anything else and the games I am currently playing are all things I find on sale/discount.
Hell, the recent MCF game felt like a better game than most, dollar for dollar.

The new Wolf looks shit. Quake LIVE plays just like Q3. Doom with vehicles? And Rage looked relatively impressive in the trailer a while back but already is losing appeal, especially when you consider it's going to be a 2010 title - the player models still don't have physics / animations up to the level of HL2, despite the huge amount of detail.

I dunno but id Software has really lost its edge. They went from producing THE engine to licence to producing engines that nobody cares about. Now they seem more interested in consoles and browser games than the PC, though they don't stack up well against the more established console orientated developers.

Q: Will I be able to blow shit up in your upcoming games?
A: Yup.
