QUAKE LIVE Beta Live

On this anniversary of the release of Qtest in 1996, the QUAKE LIVE Website is now accepting all comers into the open beta of QUAKE LIVE, the free web-based version of Quake III Arena. Word is: "Welcome to QUAKE LIVE! Everyone on the development team and at id Software would like to thank you for stopping by and giving this very exciting new project of ours a shot. We look forward to hearing from you, playing in matches with you, and most of all hope you and your friends have a great time with the game."

I guess I'm just getting old maybe. It might just be too quick for me now. Maybe tomorrow on a couple cups of coffee I'll have another go. Maybe just need some practice... I don't remember that zoom thing though. Is that new?

No that's just the effect of playing progressively more dumbed-down games.

Luckily I never stopped playing Q3... Well instaUnlagged mod ;D

As an aside, did you know that people that drink shitloads of beer and are really old, actually benefit from super intense, hand-eye co-ordinated thought processes? It makes them less susceptible to Altimeters disease. And limp consolitis of the dick.

It's a fact. Play Quake or go back to sleep. Your choice.

I guess I'll warm up to 'nostalgia' then gib your ass somewhere else. Pick a game, slo-mo 'gamer'.

Will be interesting to see if this strong initial interest will die off quickly or not. Quake95 (for windows 3.1) was my very first fps shooter experience (and then Quake2), and therefore has some nastalgic value for me, however since 1998 the UT series has always been a much better game for this genre.

While I'll be spending the time to download this (80% due to the fact that its free, 10% nastalgia, 10% curiousity) I cant help but wonder what all the hub-bub is about in getting to play a 13 year old game because personally speaking I think that once the nastalgia thing wears off (within a week for me i think) itll be right back to UT and Arma, heh.
This is a web-based version of Quake 3 (as the headline says), not the original Quake. It's not quite as nostalgic as it might appear, since a lot of people are still playing Quake 3 today. According to Gamespy, there are 5k players, which is more than America's Army and UT2004.

apparently the queue/install procedure is completely borked over there and does not work due to serious bugs. It seems MOST downloaders have wasted their time waiting in queue only to be disapointed after waiting for a couple hours and the game not installing and then being re-queued all over again, lol.

I thought maybe these poor folks just didnt have a clue so i went ahead and tried it myself only to find that its all true...you wait in a line of 50,000 people ahead of you (about a 3 hour wait) then it asks you to install their browser addon and restart your browser, but after doing that and logging back into their site it just places you back in the queue to start all over again, weeee!

If there's any silver lining at all to this is that at least it the experience was free and only a waste of TIME, because typically you'd have a similar experience after having to PAY for a game these days, hahahahahahahaha.

its hard to believe in such hard times and with unemployment numbers as high as they are that such morons are still at work :-)

Ever since me and a group of friends discovered Rune Quake 3, regular plain ol' vanilla Q3 just doesn't compare.... Interesting concept, but ultimately, why?

People are all excited about it now but when you play it and realize the tired graphics and the tired gameplay they will stop playing it because the nostaliga will have worn off.

I'm pretty sure everyone knows what to expect from Quake Live. Q3 was and still is one of the best shooters ever. The gameplay isn't really tired because there's nothing like it on the market now.

It's a public beta, giving the system a total hammering to find out where the weaknesses are is the point. The closed beta couldn't offer anything like the same load test.

Color me surprised at how robust this game is. I hear "free web-based" and I picture a game running in a browser window with ads to the side and an incomplete texture pack. But this is a very thorough interface for how small the client download is.

And I agree with a previous commenter about how out of shape I felt. This is just such fast, classic, old-school shooter flava. No gimmicky objectives, no distracting environments, just shoot the hell out of each other. I miss the gibs though.

Wow, I got brutalized by the Expert AI. I started off with an 8 point lead, lost map control, got dominated until Crash was up by 3 points and I barely pulled off the win at 12 to 11. I recall the fight being much easier in closed beta.

And yeah, the ridiculously long queues are fairly counter-productive to the whole "pick up and play" appeal of a web-based game.

It's pretty funxxor. Was just playing some CTF and we SPANKED the other team. They got smacked on their saucy little asses. We should see if we can get a Blue's Crew together for some co-ordinated fraggage.
