Mirror's Edge Map Pack

The Windows edition of the Mirror's Edge: Pure Time Trials Map Pack is now live on the EA Store, for some unexplained reason delayed over day after its release was announced. Here's the official skinny: "Time Trial is a popular mode in Mirror's Edge that challenges players to find the fastest route across various maps. Players can upload their best time to the Mirror's Edge leaderboards for their friends to download and compete against. Players can see their friend's "ghost" run as they race their way through the course to the top of the leaderboards." The map pack is a $9.99 purchase, only available via digital distribution, and it should be heading to other online outlets soon.

A few maps for 20% of the cost of the game? Strikes me as a bit excessive, especially when you consider the amount of free content for TF2 and UT3. I just don't see the value here.

Did anyone really expect to get something free out of EA? Next it'll be Mirror's Edge: UnderArmour Collection.

The price is steep but on top of that the levels are not the same quality as the originals. There is no architectural design or attempt to model anything real. These levels are so much cheaper to produce.

People complained that they wanted time trial/freerunning maps so they got what they asked for. Should it have been patched in? Not for me to say. People who think this is gouging need to head over to Xbox Live and take a look at some games that charge $5 for a t-shirt for your character to wear in some games. Mirror's Edge is also an unproven IP for EA, you'll notice their more popular games tend to get more free content and patch support than their newer stuff unfortunately.

In the old days we'd get bug fixes and a few levels thrown in with a patch.

Times, they are a-changing.

I suppose it just comes down to, 'if you don't like it, don't buy it'. Who cares? I don't.

If someone makes some 'DLC' for a game that I really want, I guess I'll buy it. I haven't seen anything yet though.

Then again, I'm not sure that I've bought a game that actually offers patches and upgrades for a fee.

Only 5% of players need to buy this. Free content from major publishers will eventually cease.

I'd buy this for $5. Though, I think it would be much better if they just released a level editor for the game. Of course, EA wouldn't like that idea since their DLC would be greatly devalued.

Personally, the value of DLC carries over the the value of the base game. Good patching with free additions makes the game itself better value, I'm more inclined to revisit a game I once skipped over (particularly when it gets a price cut; once the "complete edition" comes out the separate packages are irrelevant to me).

Similarly, paid-for DLC carries over. When reconsidering buying a game I consider it all as one package. Therefore when the DLC is good I'm more likely to buy the original game too.

But when the DLC costs money yet seems to be including stuff that maybe should have shipped with the game, or stuff that simply isn't good value, it devalues the original game too. Partly because it's a total cost : total value thing, but partly because I just assume they took the same attitude with the game.

Oh and level editors & mods. These mean developers have a community producing extra content for next to nothing. Every time they release a decent mod, the game becomes that bit more appealing to people who once skipped over it. Civ IV is a great example of this, some people buy that game just to play Fall from Heaven mod. Some people buy the game, keep playing it due to mods then buy expansions. Some publishers seem to be taking the approach of "monetizing" (I really hate the word) everything, and that a high value game does nothing but raise expectations and slow down the time until the next game is bought. For these people free content doesn't just cost to produce, they think it costs them sales of the next game too.

I suppose I might be 'old school', but I just can't bring myself to believe that reneging on a map editor and charging people for superficial content is 'value' in my eyes.

To me it just smells like 'scam'.

Scam bro.

Editors go hand-in-hand with a good fps. Devs should know that.

The other reason I wont touch this is how EA handled the POS PC port. Most specifically no true 16:10 resolutions, just like Assassins Creed and FEAR 2.

I"m not going to buy the game for over $20 let alone spend $10 on some lame DLC for it. Some time next year when Steam has a weekend sale for the game and DLC for $20 I'll break out my card and play this game. Unless that happens EA can sit on it!

I don't really have a problem with paid extra content so long as it really is extra content. When they are holding back content that otherwise would have been released with the game, then it's ridiculous. It's just a way to sell a $50 game for $60, like advertising a car for $15,000, but the heater, an 'optional' extra, costs $2000.

I have a very simple policy with DLC... if I want it and it seems worth it, I buy it. If not, I don't.

I bought the Operation: Anchorage DLC for Fallout 3 and will likely buy the other 2 as well. I love that game, and it's worth the money to me.

This? Not really. I love Mirror's Edge, it's actually very underrated in my opinion and one of the top games from last year, but the story mode is more my bag, and I would rather just replay that.

These maps are beautiful! I haven't been in awe this much since tron 2.0

Ambient, Bright, Open, Eerie even. It shows how much thought was put into providing alternate routes, keep exploring.

Stupid map pack (yeah, I purchased it) doesn't install properly on my Steam-purchased MIRROR'S EDGE.

So, now what do I do!?
