I benchmark well over 30fps at 1680x1050 with everything on max on a intel dual core 2 @ 3Mhz with 2 gigs of ram on a 8800 GTS 640mb and run the game between 30-40fps.

What sorta systems are you guys running with such horrible performance?

Guys, modern video cards do 4xAA with minimal performance impact. R* even released the game with a mindset for future graphics card with more video memory (over 1GB) so its clear to me that they didn't implement or allow AA for other reasons, not because of the performance impact. Those being probably budget and/or limited skills of whoever ported it to PC.

The game just runs like ass for multiplayer. Multiplayer games need 60fps but this game drops too low at times, the weapons are limited (and don't feel polished), the peer to peer multiplayer net code is unrealiable and subject to lots of lag, etc etc.. This game needs a comprehensive service pack, not just a patch. lol (I think there are some tweaks that can greatly increase the FPS tho)

F*** R*.

ps. the new Project Reality .85 for Battlefield 2 is awesome!!

I will put up with the crap like Windows Live and the Social garbage if the game behind it is good enough. I can also easily ignore the fact that there is no AA; graphics fade away into the background after a while anyway. But to leave the game so buggy and so poorly optimized that it is basically unplayable is unconscionable.

Maybe I'll try again in a year, when I have much better hardware. But I won't be so quick to support Rockstar in the future.

I recently stood before it on the shelf and wanted to try it out since there was a patch out now, but then I remembered that this Social Club crap and Windows Live shit has to be installed and the (for me aswell) important AA is nonexistant, so I just bought The Witcher EE instead.
I have given up on waiting for BIS to come back to their senses and do a real ArmA 2 successor.

Indeed. GfWL is perfectly fine with DOWII and acceptable with GTAIV (even if it does seem unnecessary). It's the engine that lets the game down, both performance and technology - it just doesn't seem at all suited to the PC, unlike Vice City.

Glad I never pick this one up sounds like a can of worms.. Windows live WTF!
Apart from the occasional startup issue (WS10 be damned), Games for Windows is this least of this half-arsed ports problems.

Another patch, and people are still having serious issues with the game.

This game will never be fixed. It's all part of the plan to discredit the PC as a gaming platform.

Multiplayer is some seriously fun stuff once you stagger through installing all the bullshit they want you to have before being able to play.

Hitting "p" adds this to the PC release, but it honestly looks worse than the jaggies.

Maybe for some people it does, but on my system it looks better (in my opinion). The game has z-fighting on my system and the blur does an OK job at making it less noticeable. Also right now I only have 256 MB VRAM so I'm limited to 1024x768 (not much longer until my 1 GB Radeon 4850 gets here). Plus with that little VRAM, all the textures are washed out anyway so it doesn't change much.

It's not so much incompetence as it is writing an engine for the consoles, then porting it to PC without rewriting the whole thing
Indeed. Games like Far Cry 2, Assassin's Creed, GRID and FEAR2 show that if you consider the PC properly as a platform then you can have a game that runs fine on both PC and console. They clearly didn't consider PC sensibilities when designing GTAIV, hence the poor performance and lack of basic features such as anti-aliasing. It seems strange, as every previous release has been done for PC as well... it's not like GTAIV was a surprise hit and they suddenly decided to port it.

Hitting "p" adds this to the PC release, but it honestly looks worse than the jaggies.

They didn't include FSAA because the originating hardware can't handle it (consoles). You want slideshow framerates to become static frame? That is what FSAA and this game means.

Problem is, its doubtful there is no AA by choice, more like Rockstar sucks at optimizing and writing graphical engine etc... Just because it's performance blows without AA doesn't mean they didnt add AA option by choice...

It's not so much incompetence as it is writing an engine for the consoles, then porting it to PC without rewriting the whole thing, which they do not deem cost effective. Console games cover up jaggies with blur and such, which is what GTA4 did on the 360. Hitting "p" adds this to the PC release, but it honestly looks worse than the jaggies.

My game still turns into a slide show after playing for 10 minutes (sometimes less). I'm talking about 1 frame ever 2 or 3 seconds.

I don't get all the whining over AA either, why can't you just force AA in your video drivers?
Because a) Why should I have to do that?, and b) Because it doesn't work.

Personally I don't see the need to use AA at high res like 1680x1050.
Well, that's because you obviously don't care about visual quality. Personally I do. And I also have a 22" widescreen monitor that runs at 1680x1050 and anti-aliasing is still VERY important.

I think it runs fine on my system, especially considering it's over 3 years old except the video card (GTX 260).
I like the way you say you "think" it runs "fine", which is basically just another way of saying it doesn't run very well. I have a C2D @3.4GHz, 6GB RAM and an overclocked 4870 and I find performance poor. Games like GTAIV are why console ports have such a bad reputation.

I'm too busy playing the game to be looking for jaggies on the edges of polygons.
Let's expand on that argument, shall we? What about shadows? Too busy playing. Weather? Too busy playing. Damage modelling? Too busy playing. Rockstar clearly did care about graphics - otherwise they would have simply reused the GTA3 engine - so it seems silly that they ignored anti-aliasing, an industry standard. The trouble is it's a double whammy - it looks poor and runs like crap.

Haven't tried it but if it runs like crap without AA, then that's the reason they didn't put AA in the game. It would literally multiply the problem by the level of AA you chose.

Problem is, its doubtful there is no AA by choice, more like Rockstar sucks at optimizing and writing graphical engine etc... Just because it's performance blows without AA doesn't mean they didnt add AA option by choice...
