On PC Patches

The Call of Duty Website has a post from Treyarch community manager JD_2020 on the process for creating a patch for a major PC game like Call of Duty: World at War. Responding to complaints about the wait for a new version of the World War II shooter, he explains the complications and testing that drag this process out for months. He also touches on console patching, turning conventional wisdom on its head by saying it is consoles that are suited to quick hotfix style patches, but there is no centralized service for hot fixes on the PC: "You may have also seen posts in the forums regarding 'hot fixes' (more specifically, in the console forums only). There is presently no infrastructure for us to release Call of Duty: World at War 'hot fixes' to the PC community, as is possible with the consoles. There is no overarching service for the PC version like PSN or Xbox LIVE to make this possible. Thus, any hotfixes you see a console receiving must wait to be included in the full PC patch. " Thanks Kotaku.

Yeah, that like... the most insane thing I have read in a while, as far as gaming is concerned. Everything he said is actually the opposite of the truth...

There is no infrastructure to release hotfixes? Huh, I guess the 900,000 patches that i've downloaded over the last ten years have all come to me in a dream?

Hey dipfuck, the infrastructure is called THE FUCKING INTERNET. Put a patch on your website and people will find it. There's like a dozen sites out there who do nothing but make patches available. This is all a mystery to you?

No wonder all your games have sucked. Please stop making Call of Duty games, as yours stink and Infinity Ward's are awesome.

To be handed the CoD4 engine, handed the server browser, and handed the entire level-up system, and to still have so many reported CTD's, bugs in the browser, and disappearing stats? Poor effort imo.
Treyarch should lose their deal to make CoD games after this.

The competitive CoD'ers have already gone back to 4 (prob more because of the giant and less than stellar maps) and almost everyone else started moving on over the holidays when there were more reports of vanishing servers, and buggy browsers.

To be handed the CoD4 engine

No no no...it was the original Doom engine, from the 90s, with a graphical update. Someone here swore to it, awhile back...and they were quickly added to the filter as soon as I finished laughing at them...

Everything he said is actually the opposite of the truth...

Pretty much. Everybody knows that console patches have to go through MS and Sony certification first, which is a slow and arduous process. This is why PC patches almost always come out before console patches. The distribution of patches is completely irrelevant to their development. Hell, even on that point he's wrong. Aside from posting the patch on the official website (and inevitably having dozens of mirrors made for you for free), you can also implement auto-update into your game so the latest patches download automatically.

As with the FEAR2 dev's claim that FEAR2 has no lead SKU, this claim is pretty obviously crap.

you guys are all extremely uninformed. What JD says is pretty accurate, and if any of you work in the industry, then you know this to be true. "Hotfixes" are not the same things as patches and do not require the same level of certification by MS/SONY/NIN

Even if the certification process is easier for a hotfix they still have to go through MS and Sony, whereas on PC they can just put the hotfix up on their webpage.

Oh okay. So when Egosoft releases a hotfix patch for X3: Terran Conflict, on their own website, which then quickly gets mirrored to all the major download sites, I guess they

- Don't work in the industry?
- Used magic?
- Made us all believe there was a hotfix, even though there really wasn't?

Seriously, which is it?

Please tell us more about this industry about which none of us know anything, oh enlightened one.

the post seems perfectly reasonable to me, and fitting with my experience.

However:
There is presently no infrastructure for us to release Call of Duty: World at War “hot fixes” to the PC community, as is possible with the consoles. There is no overarching service for the PC version like PSN or Xbox LIVE to make this possible. Thus, any hotfixes you see a console receiving must wait to be included in the full PC patch.
Isn't the auto update system performing this "overarching service" he refers to?

What a fucking stupid thing to say. Whatever, the Call of Duty series is dead, it died after United Offensive was release. There's only so many times they can reskin the same games before people take notice.

Yea ok...try telling that to the MILLIONS of people that bought CoD4 or World At War, and still play them religiously.

Hate to break it to ya but both of these games are far better than the first 2 games.

Not by a longshot, the Call of Duty series lost it's edge when they decided to go Halo with the regenerating health system in Call of Duty 2. Online became boring to play, since it turned into a camp/spam fest.

Call of Duty sucks, I don't see what people see in it. Just because it sells well doesn't mean it's any less shittier. It's just another half-assed twitched based shooter with some shiny graphics to cover up it's piss poor level and script designs. Don't get me started on the HORRIBLE multiplayer, and I mean horrible. I've never played an online game that pissed me off more than CoD4. It sucks, it's boring, it gets old fast, there is almost no skill or teamwork involved with the game. There are so many better multiplayer games out there that are better, both old and new.

I mean respawning enemies? Give me a fucking break, this isn't the days of N64 or SNES, cut that shit out.

Online became boring to play, since it turned into a camp/spam fest.

It's always been that way, from the first game, up to WaW, that's why I've never playing the CoD MP games.

Call of Duty series lost it's edge when they decided to go Halo with the regenerating health system in Call of Duty 2

Scuse me, are you freaking serious? The game is not defined by whether you get random med kit drops from enemies, or whether the health regenerates. CoD has already been a linear shooter that you just ride the rails, doesn't allow for much exploration witht he constant respawning enemies. With that style gameplay, I'll take regenerating health over dying repeatedly trying to find a health pack in the area just so I can progress through a level.

Call of Duty sucks, I don't see what people see in it.

Then why are you debating quality amongst the different games? Other than the leveling/reward system, not much has changed from CoD to CoD5. Call of Duty 1 & 2 certainly do not stand on a pedestal above 4 & 5, whether you like the series or not.

I mean respawning enemies?

You are about 6 years late to that debate. All of your complaints have been in all versions of CoD since the first game...which takes us back to the point about how the hell you can figure CoD has gone downhill from United Offensive, when nothing has actually changed much except the leveling & reward system.

here is no overarching service for the PC version like PSN or Xbox LIVE to make this possible.

Wait let me fix that...

There is no overarching service that we do not have to maintain or pay for like PSN or Xbox LIVE to make this possible.

How about you support your fucking game and make your own. Make a auto updater in the game like A LOT of company's do now. Or just post it on your damned site and whiten a few hours its mirrored on god knows how many other servers.

What a crock of shit...
