On PC Patches

The Call of Duty Website has a post from Treyarch community manager JD_2020 on the process for creating a patch for a major PC game like Call of Duty: World at War. Responding to complaints about the wait for a new version of the World War II shooter, he explains the complications and testing that drag this process out for months. He also touches on console patching, turning conventional wisdom on its head by saying it is consoles that are suited to quick hotfix style patches, but there is no centralized service for hot fixes on the PC: "You may have also seen posts in the forums regarding 'hot fixes' (more specifically, in the console forums only). There is presently no infrastructure for us to release Call of Duty: World at War 'hot fixes' to the PC community, as is possible with the consoles. There is no overarching service for the PC version like PSN or Xbox LIVE to make this possible. Thus, any hotfixes you see a console receiving must wait to be included in the full PC patch. " Thanks Kotaku.

In addition to everyone pointing out that there's no reason you can't just post a link to a hotfix download (like every other dev does) the game is on Steam, ffs, but there's no infrastructure? It's already on the goddamn over-arching service. They are sitting in the Failboat while saying they just have no failboat at all.

Just a long winded version of FUCK YOU pc gamers we are focusing are support on console.
If they wanted so called "HOT FIXES" they could just post them as small patches for the pc.

Personally I will never buy another game from Treyarch again ever!

Never could get this turd to run right on my box and yes I fucked with it for days.

How about the truth, this games multiplayer is so buggy that they are spending all there time trying to fix the console versions and do not care to put resources on a PC fix. Seems that the PS3 version is also taking a back seat while the xbox is getting all the fixes.

On a side note I enjoyed the single player campaign, I thought the levels were well done, and although quite linear like all COD games they did make some of the levels large enough that you have multiple options\paths to complete them. Working my way through the game on Vet, insanely hard to do, really wanting my KB\mouse now, I'm playing on the PS3.

Gee, its not like there's no turn-key application that can be included with the game that allows auto-patching.

Just say "Activision was too cheap to give a shit about the PC users hence we have to do it all the hard way".

There's certainly many times more GB worth of drive space and bandwidth available for PC users to grab files from than Live and PSN combined, assuming files get mirrored (which of course they do). Factor in torrents and you have an essentially unlimited capacity to tap into. There's just no comparison.

I can only guess he meant to say that Live / PSN provide a much easier mechanism to update a particular file in a given game than PC game patches or hotfixes do. Being able to drop a file into Live and have it propagate throughout your user base automatically instead of having to create a separate manual install is nice. Knowing that that base all have the same hardware is nice too.

Still, we PC users (you know, the ones being blamed for torrenting games so easily because we're smarter than typical console players) I think could handle being given just a .DLL or handful of files to update our own builds, especially those of us getting crashes on launch for known problems that have us waiting for weeks for something they can fix by giving us one file. Even something like the old RTPatch program would do! But of course that's too messy compared to the nice neat console distribution system. Still, there is the question: Why isn't Windows Live able to perform the same function as XBox Live? And why don't they use Steam, which these days seems to be the last thing that gets an update? This problem is more political or economic than technical.s{

Wow, this guy must think we're all clueless. Hey, what about showing patch links/news in-game or at the official page? What about giving an in-game error message when the server you connect see that you don't have the last version? It's not hard to advertise patches.

I don't think this guy is getting enough ridicule. The internet websites like bluesnews and thousands of others will let people know there is a "patch" or a "hotfix" and where to download it. The internet removes any meaningful difference between a "hotfix" and a "patch." You can release both of them on the internet whenver you feel they are ready for release.

I just don't understand the bizzaro statements this guy made. Maybe he will elaborate. What he is saying is not based in any kind of reality.

So what is the difference between a "hotfix" and a "patch"?

How about you support your fucking game and make your own. Make a auto updater in the game like A LOT of company's do now. Or just post it on your damned site and whiten a few hours its mirrored on god knows how many other servers.

What a crock of shit...

Online became boring to play, since it turned into a camp/spam fest.

It's always been that way, from the first game, up to WaW, that's why I've never playing the CoD MP games.

Call of Duty series lost it's edge when they decided to go Halo with the regenerating health system in Call of Duty 2

Scuse me, are you freaking serious? The game is not defined by whether you get random med kit drops from enemies, or whether the health regenerates. CoD has already been a linear shooter that you just ride the rails, doesn't allow for much exploration witht he constant respawning enemies. With that style gameplay, I'll take regenerating health over dying repeatedly trying to find a health pack in the area just so I can progress through a level.

Call of Duty sucks, I don't see what people see in it.

Then why are you debating quality amongst the different games? Other than the leveling/reward system, not much has changed from CoD to CoD5. Call of Duty 1 & 2 certainly do not stand on a pedestal above 4 & 5, whether you like the series or not.

I mean respawning enemies?

You are about 6 years late to that debate. All of your complaints have been in all versions of CoD since the first game...which takes us back to the point about how the hell you can figure CoD has gone downhill from United Offensive, when nothing has actually changed much except the leveling & reward system.

What a fucking stupid thing to say. Whatever, the Call of Duty series is dead, it died after United Offensive was release. There's only so many times they can reskin the same games before people take notice.

As long as you realize you're in the very small minority on that opinion, you're good.

Hate to break it to ya but both of these games are far better than the first 2 games.

Not by a longshot, the Call of Duty series lost it's edge when they decided to go Halo with the regenerating health system in Call of Duty 2. Online became boring to play, since it turned into a camp/spam fest.

Call of Duty sucks, I don't see what people see in it. Just because it sells well doesn't mean it's any less shittier. It's just another half-assed twitched based shooter with some shiny graphics to cover up it's piss poor level and script designs. Don't get me started on the HORRIBLE multiplayer, and I mean horrible. I've never played an online game that pissed me off more than CoD4. It sucks, it's boring, it gets old fast, there is almost no skill or teamwork involved with the game. There are so many better multiplayer games out there that are better, both old and new.

I mean respawning enemies? Give me a fucking break, this isn't the days of N64 or SNES, cut that shit out.

Yea ok...try telling that to the MILLIONS of people that bought CoD4 or World At War, and still play them religiously.

the post seems perfectly reasonable to me, and fitting with my experience.

However:
There is presently no infrastructure for us to release Call of Duty: World at War “hot fixes” to the PC community, as is possible with the consoles. There is no overarching service for the PC version like PSN or Xbox LIVE to make this possible. Thus, any hotfixes you see a console receiving must wait to be included in the full PC patch.
Isn't the auto update system performing this "overarching service" he refers to?
