UGO Buys 1Up; EGM Will Close

Gamasutra has word that UGO has purchased Ziff Davis' 1Up division, a move that has been rumored for a while now, and true to other rumors, print magazine EGM is not part of the deal, and is discontinued following the January, 2009 issue. They also have word that some 30 layoffs immediately followed the deal, and the article offers proud quotes from UGO high command, as well as a copy of an internal Ziff Davis email announcing the move and outlining plans for the future. For the record, UGO places the advertising on this website.

They're probably pirates too, since only they would find any sense in continuing a losing proposition and that something thats not profitable can't expect to remain in business.

The pirates in China beg to differ, as do the pirates in Somalia. Yarrr!

Not that it's any of our business Blue, but did UGO buy this site, or do you just have a business agreement with them?

Just a business agreement for the ads.

I generally don't parse words, which is why I said "UGO places the advertising on this website." If UGO owned Blue's News, I would come out and say so.

Damn, does anyone have any suggestions for Podcast of the same caliber as 1Up Yours? Hopefully John Davidson will show up on another podcast; he really is a great representative of the industry.

Too bad that the "community" didn't pay the bills. You cannot continue to pay employees - even if they are stellar - if the money ain't coming in. You must stay lean and focused in business to succeed - I don't know why people get so upset - business is business.

...because those "people" are fucking retards who have no business acumen? They're probably pirates too, since only they would find any sense in continuing a losing proposition and that something thats not profitable can't expect to remain in business.

I've been a visitor since the days of qTest, and I'm always glad that you still seem to be around and kicking for my daily gaming news fix.

I'd like to know where UGO got the kind of money necessary to buy 1Up in the first place.

"Rosebud."

As noted in the article, UGO is now owned by Hearst.

I can't believe a business model could fail where they give away tons of magazines for free and they had a website that was a cluttered, unreadable mess.

Amazing.

Now, more than ever, you guys need to enable ads on this site! Its a pain, but it'll keep Mr. Heaslip's overlords giddy.

Except for the fact that their business depends on ad revenue from the community that browses their sites, which will be nonexistent. They would have been better off not buying it at all.

UGO is fucking retarded - they just killed off every single piece of content that the "bustling community" they mention cares about. There will be no more community after this.

This is absolutely terrible. 30 of the most entertaining, talented personalities in the industry just lost their jobs today. Some of the best gaming podcasts around were suddenly killed off. The 1UP Show will be no more.

UGO is fucking retarded - they just killed off every single piece of content that the "bustling community" they mention cares about. There will be no more community after this.

Jeff Green is already at EA.

-- Doesn't matter who owns it, I still hate their damn ads.
I won't be participating in 1up's stuff anymore because of the layoffs.

There goes one of my favorite things in the industry (games journalism).

I just emptied my profile on 1up.com. I really hate UGO's obtrusive ads on here too btw.

Media consolidation is bad for the consumer, and bad for democracy. And how can they be proud of laying off 30 people?
"Van Gogh painted alone and in despair and in madness and sold one picture in his entire life. Millions struggled alone, unrecognized, and struggled as heroically as any famous hero. Was it worthless? I knew it wasn't."
