Warren Spector's Mickey Mouse Game?

Gamasutra reports rumors that Warren Spector's Junction Point Studios is working on a project codenamed "Epic Mickey," saying they've seen concept art of this platformer game starring Mickey Mouse. Junction Point, founded by Deus Ex and System Shock designer Spector, was acquired by Disney last year, and word at the time was they'd be developing a "next generation" project. They also recall a recent report in EGM saying: "Word is that Spector's new Disney project will be a platformer looking to compete with a certain pesky plumber. And who's big enough to take on Nintendo's star? Only the mouse himself!" And of course, Spector himself recently said: "My team and I have been working hard on our own and (get ready for the cool factor to go way up) in collaboration with folks from Disney Feature Animation and Pixar." They are not sure how far along the project is, but they offer a description of the art they saw: "Though the kooky environmental concepts, with visible large cogs, gears and even a large fork that serves as a building's awning, are somewhat reminiscent of Disney's Toontown Online MMO, the images -- particularly the cloud-stained seaside painting -- have a distinctly shadowed, steampunk vibe."

Bopper, read a bit about what the lead dev actually meant with that comment, he was not saying that DX was bad at all.

Warren Spector making an epic Mickey Mouse game and the lead developer on Deus Ex 3 saying the first game was "a little slow". That comment still disturbs me a little, that's like criticizing a Dickens novel for not having pop-up pictures.

In all seriousness though, don't write this one off yet. Give WS some credit and wait before you judge.

Epic mickey = huge prank? I didn't think this was April first, but maybe that's just how far this joke extends. Damn you, Warren Spector!

In typical Spector fashion each level will have three different ways to complete it - one of which will always be "crawl through an air duct".

The jokes kinda write themselves...

Warren, how did you end up where you are today?

So sad...

And what, exactly, is wrong with Mickey Mouse? He sure as hell has made me a lot happier in my lifetime than all the edgy killers and morally bankrupt twats kids are being raised on today. Not that I don't enjoy a thriller now and then, but the 16-year-old's-vision-of-macho that drives computer gaming today has gotten very, very old.

I say it's too early to write the obituary. If anyone else's hands, it would be easy for me to dismiss. But Warren's got one heck of a track record, including a nearly-10-year-old game that still tops my all-time favorite games list.

I wish him luck. I guess it's better to stay connected to the industry, no matter how peripherally. All the same he should have went out with a bang. His buddy Richard bought a ticket on a Russian rocket, come back to earth and walked off into the sunset. That's how the old ones should go; with a little spectacle. Now we'll have to watch him fade into the 'drool bib and diapers' stage. Sad really.

Is this the Disney game where Mickey gets his revenge on the former members of his Mickey Mouse Club? Ala Saw type revenge (Warren could still balls this up by giving Britney unified ammo)

:-facepalm-:

I'm still mildly interested in that cartoony ninja thing they were working on.

Well guys, I did a little research and managed to find part of the project Warren is working on...it certainly does look edgy and "epic"...

It's hard to imagine such a game being enjoyable, but... time will tell.

Kingdom Hearts met the same skepticism, but RPG fans at least ended up loving it. The game certainly did well.

A new platformer is always good news in my book. Mickey or not, I'll give it a shot based on that alone. I guess I must not be so insecure that I can't play a game that looks kiddie every now and then, even if it isn't in gameplay.

Sounds like a fun gig to me. Working with Disney and Pixar, and being able to use iconic Mickey Mouse. I just hope they don't re-image it like they did with Looney Tunes characters, Loonatics Unleashed, what an epic amount of fail that was.
