Ensemble Retrospective

How many bites does it take to get to the center of the Ensemble Studios story? One, two, three... err, three! That's the scope of the "Age of Ensemble" retrospective on Crispy Gamer looking back at the history of the RTS developer through the words of the ensemble at Ensemble and industry pundits, even as the studio being folded by owner Microsoft Game Studios. The extensive series of articles concludes with a frank look at what Ensemble was up against by the end of its run, battling burnout after working on the same Age of Empires dynamics for a decade amid industry chatter that the RTS genre was dead, followed by the Halo Wars project, and the simultaneous difficulties inherent in creating an RTS game from a shooter that's targeted towards consoles.

It sounds like Halo Wars (intended to be a major important release) didnt turn out well and MS decided to close up an expensive-to-run studio. MS cant come out and say that, so any press releases or articles we see should be taken with a big grain of salt.

The closure of Ensemble Studios is really one of the most surprising moves from Microsoft that I have seen. I guess being really sucessful in your work is not enough for that company. Last time I checked all AoE games were million sellers, how many other studios can say the same for their games? With the release of Halo Wars it makes even less sense to close the studio down. A really bad move from MS imo.

There are people being kept from Ensemble to do post-release work on the game as mentioned in an interview before. As Ensemble said, they wanted to make the game as solid as possible and for post-release, as the people doing post-release are/were part of the company and didn't want to leave them in a bad spot once the game ships.

I thought the game was cancelled when they closed Ensemble.
So there's some team at Microsoft Games still working on it...wow.

Anybody else think the closing of Ensemble Studios doesn't bode well for Halo Wars? I'm really surprise Microsoft would do this prior to launching the game. I can understand if the game post-launch was a failure and thus caused the closing of the studio, but prior to launch makes it look like they don't believe the game will be a success. Otherwise, why close down a studio that created a hit and would have the most insight on delivering a kick-ass sequel?
